The four finalists.
Both semifinals went 7 games.
Gene Abood and Marc Marin went 7 games and needed extras to settle it. In the bottom of the 11th, a base hit from Bob Hazle, sacrifice, and a game winning walk off single by Andre Dawson sends Gene to the championship.
Scott Jackson and Tom Antonucci also went 7. Bob Shawkey went 6 1/3 perfect innings as Scot held a 6-0 lead through 7. Tom broke through in the 8th and continued to rally in the 9th bringing Lloyd Waner to the plate. A 1-10 foul out ended the game and sends Scott to the finals.
Game 4- Waite Hoyt and Lew Burdette both pitch to the moment as the teams are tied 2-2 going into the 9th. Bob Shawkey and Don McMahon each go 4 while Larry Parrish misses two ballpark home run chances in HR 1 Out 2-20 County Stadium.
In the top of the 14th, Yogi Berra hits a 2-run shot and Johnny Kucks secures the win for Scot.
We go to Game 5, Gene 3-Scot 1
Game 5- Gene gets out to an early 4-0 lead in the first helped out by an error on starter Don Larsen. Adcock doubled to drive in two in the inning. Scot’s Yankees pairing struck back in the fourth with a grand slam by Yogi Berra to tie the game.
Game stayed tied at 4 until the 8th with Hank Bauer’s RBI single for Scot.
Gene’s Expos/Braves strike back in the bottom of the 8th. With one out, Gary Carter singled. Pinch hitter Andy Pafko walked. Joe Adcock’s single tied the game. Andre Dawson then laid down a squeeze bunt single to take the lead.
Elias Sosa comes in and gets the first two outs before a walk to Gil McDougald brought up Babe Ruth.
Rudy May enters the game and a 3-4 strikeout ends the series.
Congrats to Gene and Scot on a terrific tournament!
