Replying to @Forbes
@Forbes just named me one of America's greatest living optimists. #76! It was a huge honor.
After all, while pessimists might be “right” for the time being, optimists do everything that drives progress.
All the great successes I know are huge optimists.
Supporting optimism is my life.
Free email sounded crazy to pessimists. But Hotmail was built by optimists, Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith.
Free phone calls and video calls sounded even crazier to pessimists. But Skype was born by optimists, Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Fries.
An electric car company and a private space company? Crazier still to a pessimist, but Tesla and SpaceX were built by the biggest optimist anywhere, Elon Musk.
Satoshi Nakamoto is an optimist, willing to transform the entire global economy with a trusted 3rd party in software around Bitcoin.
Every one of those started with an entrepreneur painting a picture of a world nobody had seen yet. My job was just to believe in the world they were creating, and to say yes to them and encourage them forward.
So the award really belongs to the founders. They supply the optimism. I just keep buying it.

For 250 years, America's story has been driven by people who took a risk on their own ideas. That's what entrepreneurship is: freedom and trust in action. As a member of the Investor Council for America's Startup (@America250) I want to see that same spirit from the next generation.
If you're an undergraduate student (or equivalent) at an accredited university, college, or trade school with an idea you're ready to build, this is your moment. Compete for a share of more than $1 million in cash and prizes, and get your idea in front of me and other leading names in tech and business.
1️⃣ Visit the America's Startup website at america250.org/americas-star…
2️⃣ Review the contest rules and confirm your eligibility
3️⃣ Grab your co-founder and submit your application by October 8

We recently published an article on how we’re building our own internal AI infrastructure for VC here at Draper. Custom workflows to help our team gather information faster, so they can get back to the true human work in VC: meeting with and being present with founders.
In 1985, I built my deal flow by knocking on the doors of the ten or so venture capitalists that existed and asking them to send me the deals they were declining. I needed to build knowledge so I could build judgment.
Forty years later, the team at Draper Associates built something I could only have dreamed of back then:
-One centralized database that holds a singular record per company that has all our internal data as well as enriched data from outside verified sources like Harmonic
-A machine learning model, trained on 40+ years of successes and passes, that reads the hundreds of deals we get every week and surfaces the best fits directly to the investment team
-A brief on every meeting before we walk in
-Warm intros drafted from a network of 15,000+ contacts
-Answers to any question from our own records in plain English across 400+ portfolio companies (and an extra info assist from our Harmonic API)
The AI/ML infrastructure handles the routine work, but judgment remains human: sitting across from a founder, recognizing a missionary, making the call while the idea still sounds crazy.
Now there are more hours for exactly that.

My grandfather Bill Draper was an incredible man. Publicly, he was a Yale and HBS alumnus and a member of the secret society Skull and Bones with George Bush, who he remained close with throughout his life. He would never let you hear the end of why you should go to Yale—he even named one of his dogs after Eli Yale. When asked about the infamous Skull and Bones, he would leave the table because it was a “secret” society, and the rule was not to discuss it.
What he did and helped create in Silicon Valley is immeasurable, but whenever he was given credit, he would pass it off to Leland Stanford. You can read about much of it in his book, The Startup Game. He was ahead of his time and had an incredible female partner, Robin Richards, during much of his venture career, at a time when that certainly wasn’t the norm. He was also the first venture capitalist in India, and to this day, without fail, anyone I meet from India raves about how much he did for the country. Always a gentleman and an eternal optimist.
His accomplishments were extraordinary—from running for Congress against THE Shirley Temple, to backing some of Silicon Valley’s first startup successes, to his work around the world and funding nonprofits through the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation.
But my memories are about the love he had for all of us, and especially for my grandmother, whom he cared for throughout her 40-year battle with Parkinson’s. A real love story. They are now happily reunited. ❤️
Family came first, a lesson he taught us all. He would bring me international black teas from his United Nations travels, and when I was little we’d have tea parties with cream and sugar. He was at every major event in my life, cheering and standing with a hand in the air, from my high school graduation to college graduation.
I can’t believe how lucky I was to have hundreds of Sunday night family dinners with him growing up, where we would debate—and, while I was applying to colleges, endure many tedious Yale mentions. 😂 He was always the kindest. My friends have been sending me wonderful messages with their own stories about growing up with him.
He was fiercely competitive when it came to chess, tennis, and just about any other game. He had a bowl of chocolate ice cream every day and often declared, “Hot fudge sundaes all around!”
I’m heartbroken to lose our patriarch, and so grateful that we had him until 98.
I was lucky enough to say goodbye to him on my grandmother’s birthday, the day before he passed, and to witness his final words with my aunt. Believe it or not, they were: “Ice cream.” 😊
He went out with a bang.
I hope this tribute is a reminder that life and family are precious—and certainly to always appreciate your dessert.
I love you, Pops, and I’ll miss you forever. Thank you for being the greatest role model any of us could have imagined.
Until we meet again. ❤️

I have a t-shirt that says Decentralize Everything. That is 40 years of observation compressed into two words, and I finally wrote the argument down as the first guest contributor to @CryptoniteRap.
The piece is about DeSci, decentralized science.
Every institution stagnates the same way. A small group ends up controlling the agenda, that group gets invested in the current framework, and challenging the consensus becomes a career risk. I have watched it in banking, telecom, rocketry, and now science.
After 40 years I boiled it down to two rules.
1- The Draper Equation: the likelihood that a society needs to rethink an industry is proportional to the number of people benefiting from existing theories without change.
2- The Draper Corollary: the more centralized the decision-making, the less innovation occurs. The more decentralized the operations, the more innovation occurs and the faster that sector grows.
The consensus mocked Hotmail, Skype, Tesla, Bitcoin, and SpaceX too. Every time, mockery was an excellent signal.

I passed on Netflix.
I passed on LinkedIn.
Got outbid on Facebook.
Sat next to Sergey and Larry on a plane, brought Google to my partners, and heard, "Draper, you've gotten us into six search engines. Why do we need another one?"
People ask me about my failures all the time.
I sat down with Nicole Petallides on Market Overtime last week and we covered all of it:
→ Why 7 of the 10 biggest companies in the world turn over every 20 years (and why that turnover is speeding up)
→ Robot "brains" that learn how to pour water without spilling it, the same way an LLM learns language
→ The shift in healthcare from chemical whack-a-mole to bio cures
→ Why every family should hold six months of Bitcoin, and why a treasurer or central bank without it is being irresponsible
→ The best advice I've ever heard anyone give an entrepreneur
→ And of course… my favorite failures of my career
Thank you Nicole and the Market Overtime team for having me.
