Last week, we brought together public economists from Ireland and further afield for the Irish Public Economics Workshop 2026 at NUI Merrion Square.
This year’s theme was “Equity and Efficiency in Tax Policy” and made for two packed days of research and discussion. #IPEW2026
Profit shifting, R&D tax credits, savings, wealth and retirement to informal work, digitalisation, recessions, tax cuts, debt sustainability, optimal taxation - and even subsidising space pirates.
A highlight: Prof. James R. Hines Jr.’s (@UMich) keynote on “Wicked Double Taxes”.
IPEW 2026 was organised by @Public_Econ_IE's @EndaHargaden (@EconomicsUCD), @barratree (@tcdeconomics), @calder_tara (@ESRIDublin), and myself.
Thanks to all our presenters, chairs, participants, funders, & supporters - and to @NUIMerrionSq for hosting us!
Watch for #IPEW2027

I was in Ghent last month. The place was obviously very rich once, and I wanted to know what happened to it. It turns out Ghent lost its industry to what may be the oldest export restriction on record: an English one, from 1275. (1/12)

There’s never been a better time to explore the interaction of economics and politics!
From trade wars to friend-shoring, today’s headlines move faster than the textbooks. To understand the shift in the global order, you have to look at the intersection of both fields.

FWIW, here's my advice for econ PhDs: it's currently extremely difficult to know what and how fundamental the changes will be that result from the expansion of AI. Trying to figure out the "right path" under such large uncertainly may be futile and can lead to paralyzing anxiety. The best strategy IMHO:
Work on something you're genuinely interested in. This increases your chances to end up working on something you're interested in in the long term (as you acquire experience in that area), plus it reduces the risk of regretting ex post having spent years doing something you don't like and that ended up being unnecessary.
Overthinking in the face of genuine uncertainty like this is a real risk here. In such situations, it makes sense to follow to some degree your gut and to weigh heavily in your choice what you personally enjoy.

Energy price spikes reflect the overall tightening of global supply chains driven by renewed geopolitical conflicts.

Did you know that @Arnold_Ventures has a standing RFP for causal research proposals related to crime and the criminal justice system? Send us your ideas! We aim to get you an answer fast (within 3 months).
All we need from you is a 3-page LOI that describes the intervention you're testing and the research design you're using.

85 people have paid the $100,000 H-1B fee so far, totaling $8.5 million in revenue. But fee revenue from H-1B apps abroad is down $28 million.
So the fee — justified by a paper claiming the revenue-maximizing fee was >$100,000! — appears to have lost the government $20 million.

Let's discuss different DiD estimators with unbalanced panels -- often due to missing data on Y, or attrition. I will use the Stata commands csdid and jwdid as part of the discussion. First, a review. Assume time-constant covariates, X and a balanced panel.
