Never thought the day would come and still hoping it won't as XTwitter still works better for me than the alternatives. However, as insurance I'd advise you to follow me on the others and I'll follow you back. All the links on my personal website. stuartbruce.info/#:~:text=NE…

Farewell Sir Patrick Stewart - one of our greatest actors and a great campaigner too. Here he is on the stupidity of the idea of leaving the ECHR.

We're deciding who gets help with energy bills based on what their house was worth in 1991. Utter madness. Another advert for digital id - the one thing that definitely wasn’t going to be in the budget. Not for proving who you are, but letting you choose to connect your own data (eg energy bills, income) so support is targeted.
NEWS ENERGY PAYMENT: £100 payment to all households in Council Tax bands A to D for England (and funding for same in other nations). That's 20m homes. Translation: This is the support for the huge rise due in January price cap. Its expected to be 27% up. Which equates to roughly £100 from Jan to March alone.

Such sad news. Sir Patrick Stewart was a wonderful inspiration, friend and supporter. From London to South Shields to New York, he always brought principle, talent, kindness, intelligence and laughter. I will miss him.

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

Very sad to hear about Patrick Stewart’s passing. A true gentle giant. I imagine, given his kindness, that it'll turn out more of us have a Patrick Stewart story than you'd imagine. Here’s my little one: Patrick was incredibly kind to me when I was a young parliamentary candidate. He'd been a party member in the area I was standing in, having lived there for years. I'd sent Christmas cards with my contact details and to all the local Labour Party members. Obviously, given the life he led, he moved around a lot, so when a few weeks or months later I spotted a missed call and a voicemail, imagine my shock and awe to hear Patrick Stewart's voice. He’d kindly shared his number so that I could give him a call back because he was keen to chat. I couldn't quite believe it (I still can’t). I was about 20 and it took quite a lot of steeling myself up before mustering up the courage to call him back! And, honestly, the loveliest person picked up the phone. He shared with me how he loved the area and he'd been away a lot, and how he'd have wanted to have helped more if he could. He wanted to thank me for the card and for being in touch, and for doing a brave thing in standing up for the values we shared. He went quiet midway through the conversation and I thought perhaps the line had cut off. But actually, it turned out, it was because he’d spotted a rare woodpecker in his garden. He was full of delight in the sight of it, and was regaling this and his recent sightings of others down the phone to me. What a genuinely lovely, kind, inspirational man. I grew up looking to the stars because of Star Trek — so many of us did. His character displayed leadership to the next generation. Our world has been, and will long be, brighter for having had Patrick Stewart in it. Thinking of Patrick’s loved ones today.

RIP Sir Patrick - a proud Yorkshireman whose journey from Mirfield to international stardom showed the extraordinary power of creativity and opportunity. From his early love of Shakespeare, nurtured by teachers in West Yorkshire, he went on to become one of the world's most celebrated actors. Beyond the stage and screen, he used his childhood experiences of domestic violence to raise awareness and support survivors. Yorkshire has lost a legend - and one of its greatest ambassadors.

I very rarely react to the death of celebrities. Patrick Stewart is different. A brilliant actor. A brilliant man. A Yorkshire man I once had the privilege of meeting. Huge regret I was working with him and never got a photo.

The funniest thing about Apple finally launching a touchscreen MacBook Pro isn't that Windows laptops got there first (that's low hanging fruit). It's watching a company reverse course on something it resisted for years, knowing how fiercely people defended that position along the way. There’s a much bigger lesson here about tech fandom. Some thoughts on yesterday's Apple announcement: 👇 windowscentral.com/hardware/…

I've recently revised my opinion on this. It is absolutely right that government (or any organisation) has its own photographers and shares its own content. But this should never be at the expense of photo-journalist pictures. I discovered last week it is, so now less supportive.
It’s yet again disappointing that British newspapers think it’s ok to use government-issued PR pictures thus making access even more difficult for independent news organisations. These are from this week alone including three front pages! #notphotojournalism

I'm deeply disappointed that the Council's Planning Enforcement Team has decided to end its enforcement activity at The Sun Inn in Hunslet. Following a structural survey submitted by the owner, officers have been advised that the interior of the building is no longer... – at Leeds, England

Palantir’s critics would have you believe we have a monopoly on government technology spend, with one MP saying there are “tentacles here that stretch into so many corners of the British state” and comparing our business practices to “what drug dealers do.” Last time I checked, there were 23 government departments. We have contracts with two of them. We also work with some police forces, the National Energy System Operator (NESO) and precisely one of nearly 400 local authorities in UK. I’d love for us to do more, but let’s keep things in perspective.

Devolution is growing out! The government is now in the final stages of agreeing 10 new devolution agreements: Mayoral Strategic Authorities for Devon, Plymouth and Torbay; Hertfordshire; Lancashire; Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland; Stoke and Staffordshire; Surrey; Thames Valley (Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Swindon); and Wessex. A Strategic Authority for Kent and Medway which will be Mayoral if the area’s Local Government Reorganisation outcome is compatible with this and Foundation if not. This adds to Cheshire and Warrington; Cumbria; Sussex and Brighton; Hampshire and Solent; Essex and Norfolk and Suffolk. And a single Foundation Strategic Authority for Cornwall. Well done to all the local leaders and MPs, businesses and partners who have made the case and done the hard work on the ground! #budget26 @mhclg

When John Healey was growing up his family moved from Malton to Rosedale in North Yorkshire. They had to hire a special removal van for the 26 pet rabbits the Healeys had. Will we see the Chancellor hark back to his childhood and pull a rabbit out of the hat in today's Budget?

Amazing: journalist does journalism to discover something, and because everyone is so used to people living by press release, they literally can't believe the journalist found it out on their own. holdthefrontpage.co.uk/2026/…
