Orch OR occurs when t=h/E_G where E_G is the gravitational self energy of superposition, h is Planck-Dirac constant and t the time it occurs. Quantum gravity is the mechanism. Sorry it’s mysterious. Have you read ‘The emperor’s new mind’ by Nobel laureate Sir Roger Penrose? It’s his idea and a damn clever way to link our consciousness to the fine scale dynamics and geometry of the universe.
Thats quantum gravity.
What’s wrong with solving two mysteries ( measurement and consciousness) with one solution, objective reduction?
Wouldn’t Occam’s razor dictate that?
Replying to @StuartHameroff
If you can't describe the mechanism or functional organization the quantum microtubules implement to give rise to consciousness, all you've done is point at something mysterious and allow consciousness to retreat into that.
That's not an explanation, and it doesn't help
Free will doesn’t mean you know the actual outcome, just the intended outcome. And read ‘Emperor’s new mind’ before trivializing noncomputability. But you’re not covering the basic problem that in cartoon neuronism, consciousness comes too late. Quantum brain biology to the rescue. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/article…

According to @StuartHameroff and Penrose Orch OR gives rise to proto-experiences.
They do not say that OR is random, which goes to show a lot about the authors.
They had to come up with the word non-computable since Penrose believes that the outcomes of those reductions which give rise to the Orch OR, therefore proto-experience, therefore consciousness, are embedded in the geometry of space-time itself. The exact mesh u referring to.
Therefore Penrose believes it is non-computable because you will never be able to know the state of the variable because that would require a top-down view of the universe from outside it a.k.a. simulators bird's eye view.
All this, does not give Free will. It just give you the illusion of it, since you never know the end result of the navigation through the mesh like you said.
The principal of least action in math, has a strong case about the light-paths network that every matter in the universe needs to follow.
That is by definition Pre-determinism, since the layout of action-reaction is either set on the pre-big bang geometry or pre-big bang constants.
You can change the subject but can’t change the fact AI is clueless about consciousness because it follows cartoon neurocomputation and suppresses Orch OR, the only theory with evidence. Do you disagree?
Anil how can you talk about evidence when you pointedly ignore and suppress the Orch OR theory of consciousness which is the only theory with supportive evidence. It’s based on selective action of anesthesia on consciousness via quantum effects in microtubules. Why the coverup? What’s the payoff?
Replying to @peterrhague
Thanks Peter, but that's not correct. Multiple realisability (different ways of flying) is not the same the substrate independence that is needed for conscious AI. Consciousness and cognition are clearly multiply realisable, but this does not show they are substrate independent. This is a stronger claim which needs more evidence. Dear Henry Shevlin
I AM a biological naturalist. All conscious organisms utilize quantum effects in microtubules to organize conscious activities. I know that because anesthesia acts by quantum effects in microtubules on all organisms.

Orch OR is a BN theory of consciousness with BY FAR the most experimental support, biological connection and explanatory power among all theories of consciousness.
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3578…
It is based on quantum processes in microtubules which have been shown to be inhibited by anesthesia. And yet Orch OR has been suppressed, ignored and was banned from ASSC by David Chalmers. Anil Seth talks incessantly about biological naturalism without mentioning Orch OR. Ned Block writes
about BN without looking inside neurons or considering Orch OR.
The fix is in. AI-backed interests are funding Neurocomputational labs to promote ‘cartoon neuron’ models incompatible with biology and consciousness. The NYU school run by Chalmers and Block won’t mention Orch OR in their curriculum.
Ironically the future of AI is in warm temperature organic gel quantum computers. LLMs and their huge energy costs will be obsolete. iopscience.iop.org/article/1…
Where do you stand Henry Shevlin?
Are you intellectually a lemming or a scientist? Seems like you’re reaching out to BN. Is it to have a reason to reject them or are you genuinely interested in how the brain works ? (unlike Chalmers, Seth, Block and Christof Koch who also pointedly ignores Orch OR.) It’s a coverup.
Microtubules are polyatomic time crystals which can act as qubits at room temperature. DeepMind should be
all over them but instead see them as a threat apparently. ingentaconnect.com/content/i…
Anesthetics bind nonspecifically by weak quantum forces but act selectively, blocking consciousness while sparing nonconscious brain activities. That’s because anesthetics randomize their quantum binding targets, but only quantum activities in conscious dynamics in microtubules are ordered, and not already randomized.
Replying to @StuartHameroff
Quantum consciousness theories commit a logical fallacy: using one mystery to explain another without a causal link, especially when anesthetics broadly target the brain, not just microtubules.
With Joseph Jacks and Anirban Bandyopadhyay at Women’s NBA Championship Finals in San Francisco. The Atlanta Dream beat our Golden State Valkyries to even the series at 1-1.
Anil, would AI based on Orch OR theory be conscious? You’ve only ruled out cartoon neuron approaches. The type of biomimetic organic ‘brain jelly’ quantum device in this paper is likely be sensitive to anesthesia, and could utilize Orch OR and be conscious.
Plus it requires very little energy and no cooling.

Fair enough, though ‘meat machines’ was condescending. But 1) Ned started with neurons and cells. How did THEY get here? 2) he didn’t mention Orch OR, the only actual biological theory of consciousness, and the theory with the most evidence. 3) electrochemical signaling is the same as cartoon neurons. and 4) every sponge, insect and crawly thing he mentioned uses its microtubules to get around. Where’s Orch OR? Have I not been obnoxious enough about this coverup?
Pretty strange to hear someone accuse @De_dicto of all people of not having a clue about biological consciousness

Brain ultrasound to Globus Pallidus relieves delusions in schizophrenia. They don’t know the mechanism but I’ll bet it’s microtubule resonance. Similar low intensity parameters to what we’ve used.
nature.com/articles/s44384-0…
I think you mean taxol (paclitaxel) which along with the others
1) don’t get through the blood brain barrier
2) bind to exterior aqueous charged surfaces of microtubules separate from the nonpolar oil-like and quantum friendly interior regions around aromatic amino acid rings conducive to quantum optics where anesthetics bind and consciousness happens.
Replying to @StuartHameroff
Sorry I might have missed some episodes, but how do you explain that microtubule-targeting meds, for example taxonomy, vinca alkaloids, epothilones, mebendazole, colchicine), do not affect consciousness the slightest?
Good question. Consciousness aside, the brain has humongous information capacity with microtubule time crystals (~10^8 tubulins per neuron and glial cell) coherently oscillating in hertz, kilohertz, gigahertz and terahertz. Let’s take just ~10^15 tubulins (total brain 10^20 tubulins) at ~10 megahertz gives
10^22 ops/sec at that one frequency. More like musical holographic waves.
Are you being facetious or sarcastic?
There’s a guy at Harvard using ultrasound to treat Alzheimer’s. His name is Seung Shik-Yoo and maybe you’d believe him since he’s from
Hah-Vahd not Arizona. He attributes the benefit to clearance of glymphatics
(Probably through activation of ependymal cell cilia composed of micro tubules lining the ventricles).
But you’re stymied by thinking anesthetics act on groups of membrane proteins rather than on microtubules whose disruption is the cause of Alzheimer’s. You’re being led astray by the anesthesia mafia who are barking up the wrong tree in the search for the target of anesthetic action.
Sabine you are missing something important. General anesthetics selectively block consciousness while sparing nonconscious brain activities. The ability to walk remains but is a conscious process. Sensory and motor potentials are unaffected by anesthesia and continue in unconscious anesthetized patients. They are mediated by membrane proteins while consciousness depends on microtubules inside neurons.
The precise selective action of general anesthetic is the absolute best way to unravel the mechanism of consciousness. academic.oup.com/nc/article/…
"What we mean by consciousness is simple enough: it is what goes away with dreamless sleep or under general anaesthesia, and what returns after waking up or while dreaming."
I think you are taking on an important topic, but this sentence makes no sense. Many things go away with dreamless sleep or under general anaesthesia, like the ability to walk, yet no one would call them consciousness. It is rather ironic to write consciousness is "simple enough" to explain and then not being able to do it.
But none of the three authoritative authors have a clue about biological consciousness. Anil spouts biological naturalism without any biology, Giulio pushes IIT which also lacks biology, and Ned with Dave Chalmers have dumbed down neuroscience to fit AI needs to be conscious. One of them look inside the neuron and rely on cartoon neuron theories. (Actually IIT doesnt even have cartoon neurons, just cartoon information). The only theory of consciousness with experimental support is the Orch OR theory of quantum processes in microtubules. academic.oup.com/nc/article/…
Anesthetics selectively block consciousness by quantum effects in microtubules. This approach
may lead to AI with consciousness.
iopscience.iop.org/article/1…
If you’re worried about conscious AI stop ignoring and suppressing Orch OR!! Conscious empathetic AI may e required to combat unconscious evil AI.
Earl I’m sorry to be a nuisance but I think MIT is completely missing the boat. The problem with Alzheimer’s isn’t amyloid or tau, or not enough AI, but that the microtubules disassemble and release tau. This has been known since 1989
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2813… This is overlooked in favor of profitable but ineffective and expensive anti-amyloid approaches.
You’re quite right that anesthesia can exacerbate Alzheimer’s because anesthetics all bind and act on microtubules, and at high doses cause depolymerization of microtubules. This has been known since 1968. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/4177…
I always kept my elderly patients warm since cold destabilizes microtubules.
Alzheimer’s can be treated by optimizing microtubule stability through microtubule stabilizing drugs like epothilone B or transcranial ultrasound which promotes reassembly. Safe, effective, inexpensive. More on that later if you want.

You’ve got it slightly backwards. Life is based on time crystals which transcend scales, from small/fast to large/slow. Microtubules are polyatomic fractal time crystals which organize all eukaryotic cells, including all of yours, at all frequencies. Evolution involves growth and downshifting to larger, slower time activities. ingentaconnect.com/content/i… Time crystals all the way down?
Replying to @blaiseaguera
Evolution scales this computation through symbiogenesis, where distinct entities fuse and cooperate to form more complex wholes. Free-swimming bacteria merged to power our cells as mitochondria, and ancient viral genes now help form our memories.
Good question. I asked Dave Chalmers years ago why IIT was, according to Dave, the ‘leading theory’. His answer was ‘because leading people say so’.
The suggestion in the IIT paper about PCI Perturbation Complexity Index supporting IIT is silly. The ‘chiming response’ to TMS or any stimulus is probably mediated by microtubules.
Replying to @StuartHameroff
@grok why is there such a persistence on ITT - especially after it’s disappointing experiement results earlier this year ? A bit confusing especially given lack of any great support anchor evidence
Each tubulin has 86 aromatic amino acid rings with pi conjugation up the wazoo. These can extend tubulin to tubulin along helical pathways suitable for topological quantum error correction. Photosynthesis quantum coherence lasts femtoseconds (10^-12 secs) and microtubule quantum states at least 10^-8 secs. That’s 4 orders of magnitude longer, and potentially mesoscopic and macroscopic lengths along microtubules. We call that the quantum underground. The binding is weak but the number of collective weakly interacting oscillations is enormous.
Replying to @StuartHameroff
You still need a materials basis for strong quantum coherence in the brain. We only see quantum coherence in photosynthesis, but it’s v weak microtubules don’t even have close to that level of pi-conjugation. A materials basis would make the case more compelling
