Impactful Civic Education & Public Participation in Bamburi Ward
The Lands Department today conducted a successful civic education and public participation session at Majaoni Primary School, bringing together residents from the Majaoni and Shanzu settlement schemes.
The session focused on key issues including:
- Payment of county land rates and land rent
- Development control approvals and requirements
- The importance of compliance in ensuring orderly and sustainable development
This initiative comes at a critical time during the ongoing land rates waiver period, offering residents valuable guidance and an opportunity to engage directly with county officials.
The exercise was led by Chief Officer Eng. Marian Mapenzi and Land Administration Director Ms. Rose Munupe, with support from the area MCA, Hon. Patrick Mwavula.
Engaging communities remains central to promoting awareness, compliance, and inclusive development.
The Department continues to urge all residents of Mombasa to take full advantage of the land rates waiver program before it ends on 15th April 2026. Settle your dues now to avoid penalties and stay compliant.

We are rolling out a comprehensive street lighting programme across Mombasa to enhance public safety, support night-time economic activity, and improve the quality of life in our neighbourhoods. Well-lit streets mean safer communities, extended business hours, and a city that works for its people - day and night.

Mombasa is growing.
Our sewer system in the Island was designed in the 1930s, when Mombasa’s population stood at about 30,000 people. Today, our city is home to more than 1.9 million residents. The pressure on this aging infrastructure is real and it shows.
Unfortunately, some residents and establishments choose shortcuts—illegally connecting to sewer lines without notifying the County Government and disposing of inappropriate materials that clog and damage the system. This is unacceptable. We have commenced a firm crackdown to identify and regularize illegal connections and to hold those responsible fully accountable.
At the same time, enforcement alone is not enough. The reality is that Mombasa requires heavy, sustained investment to modernize and expand its sewer infrastructure to match our current and future needs. This is why we deliberately pursued a Public Private Partnership to revamp our public sewer system—bringing in capital, expertise, and efficiency to deliver long-term, sustainable solutions.
A clean, functional city is a shared responsibility. As the County Government does its part, I urge all residents and businesses to do theirs. This is how we build a dignified, healthy, and modern Mombasa for all.

I have today made appointments in the Executive Office of the Governor following the establishment of positions by the Mombasa County Public Service Board, in line with the provisions of the law.
Mr. Maurice Ogeta has been appointed to serve as Advisor, Security Affairs in the County Government of Mombasa. This appointment is informed by his many years of experience and deep institutional knowledge built at local, regional and global levels, including his service to our late Founding Party Leader, H. E. Raila Odinga, C.G.H.
I have also appointed Ken Ambani as my Advisor on Creative Arts. His wealth of knowledge and first-hand experience in the sector will be instrumental as we work to revive and grow the creative industry in Mombasa for the benefit of our artists, youth and the wider economy.
