In honor of #WorldKidneyDay today, the ISN has dressed the famous #MannekenPis with the colors of @WorldKidneyDay. Special thanks to the city of Brussels for helping us to raise awareness of the high burden of kidney disease worldwide.

Kidney doctor @SumitMohanMD noticed that his hospital performed way more transplants on weekends. Why? That question led to a bigger one: thousands of patients die on the kidney transplant list each year — could some of those deaths have been avoided? freak.ws/3DmQM8k

“Dialysis has a survival rate that is lower than most cancers at the five-year mark. So transplant is really the life saving opportunity for individuals who have end stage kidney disease,” explains @SumitMohanMD. So why do we toss so many healthy kidneys? freak.ws/3kx5WAG

During COVID-19, reports suggest higher morbidity and mortality among candidates waitlisted for a kidney transplant in the US. This analysis shows higher rates of mortality linked to COVID-19 among waitlisted candidates and kidney transplant recipients bit.ly/CJN02690221

Publishing papers is great, but they don't determine your value.
Getting grants can be important, but they don't set your self-worth.
Receiving awards is fun, but they don't replace family and friends.
It's okay to enjoy academic achievements, but remember we are people first.

Anatomical abnormalities increase the risk of deceased donor kidney discard. This study found that, compared to single-artery kidneys, those with multiple renal arteries are harder to place, but have similar delayed graft function & early graft failure bit.ly/KID0005152021

Been speaking to my India 🇮🇳 friends academic colleagues: almost all have lost loved ones or very sick relatives. My sense: as bad as this is being reported, it’s even worse. I will keep pushing on Biden Admin to do more for India, and I won’t sleep until our vaccine is delivered

Very simply, the best article I've read in a while on these matters.

NEW: Finding a vaccine just got very very easy.
Know someone who wants to find a vaccine?
Text your zip code to 438829 (getvax). And see what happens...

Today's India numbers so awful
Record 380,000 new infections
22% test positivity (yikes)
And 3600 deaths, likely a wild underestimate
Exponential growth seems to be slowing
But many weeks of suffering ahead
World must do more to stop the spread & care for the sick

It's time to act.

With hundreds of thousands of people dying around the world, it is criminal not to waive vaccine patents at this time. 60 countries are in favour but both UK and US opposing it in the WTO. Shameful.
