Have a listen to some of our amazing students speaking up for DLD (Developmental Language Disorder). They talk about how important it is that everyone knows about DLD. They also demonstrate how hidden it can be.

These are the children I was alluding to when I answered a question @MichaelRosenYes put to teachers (at Colden Common Primary a few wks ago) about how to support children to analyse narrative. Children with DLD (& other commn challenges) need much more visual support.

The project aims to update our existing DLD research priorities and translate them into fundable research questions! Find out more here: bit.ly/3SYO5TA
.@CAntalekPhD from @IoeResearch re access arrangements for exams for students with literacy difficulties. Access arrangements have been increasing recently.
Most popular is 25% extra time.
Process is difficult & time-consuming.
#SSSR2024
Surveyed assessors re access areangements. Themes:
- equity
- resources impact identification & support
- lack of consistency & systematic approach
#SSSR2024
.@TheSpeechGuy re writing intervention for children with language-based learning difficulties. Asked them to think》say》write. Small RCT with 4th-5th grade.
#SSSR2024
.@alliedorman re students with varying levels of low reading comprehension.
Children with mixed reading difficulties have the most severe reading comprehension diffs (none above 10th centile). Need to focus on language too!
#SSSR2024
Beth Phillips: connections between home literacy & growth in syntactic skills in high risk group (1st degree family member with language or literacy diffs).
No prediction of home literacy to growth in CELF sentence structure, but HL sig predictor of word structure.
#SSSR2024
Mads Poulsen: does the relationship between syntactic & reading Cn depend on the language level?
At middle school syntactic comprehension is as strong a predictor of reading comprehension as vocabulary.
#SSSR2024
3 factor model of decoding, vocab & syntax best for predicting L1 reading comprehension.
Relationship between syntax & reading comprehension did not depend on language level (but L2 children slightly different patterns)
#SSSR2024
Katie Hoferek re role of syntactic comprehension on reading comprehension.
Asked grade 5 children to
1) split up bi- or multi-clause sentences into clauses.
2) find subject & main verb in complex sentences
#SSSR2024
Reading comprehension was predicted by syntactic comprehension & finding the subject and main verb (but not splitting into clauses).
Suggests teaching children to find the subject & main verb & obj may help reading comprehension
#SSSR2024
Interesting discussion re orthographic facilitation & the minimal level of skills required for it to be helpful.
This is particularly important when supporting word learning in children with DLD &/or dyslexia. For some, adding orthography may actually hinder learning
