Yesterday, on the International Day of Democracy, @Int_IDEA presented its annual publication "The Global State of Democracy" that highlights the correlation of the decline of democracy worldwide and the rise of conflicts.
“The choice between investing in democracy and investing in security is a false one.”
That was International IDEA Secretary-General Kevin Casas-Zamora opening today’s global launch of The Global State of Democracy 2026 in Stockholm.
The data paints a more complicated picture.
Democracy is stagnating or declining across much of the world. Conflict is rising. But the relationship between the two isn’t as simple as “less democracy, more conflict”.
As Seema Shah, Head of Democracy Assessment, put it: “Democratic erosion is not only a governance challenge but also a growing security concern.”
The report finds the risk of conflict is highest in countries caught between consolidated democracy and consolidated autocracy.
