Syria can speak freely, but is its government listening? Nearly two years after Assad’s fall, Syrians enjoy unprecedented freedom of expression. But government transparency has yet to catch up. Nearly two years have passed since the end of the Assad regime, and Syrians are still owed much more than they have been given; that includes communication and explanations on issues that directly affect them. My piece for @SyriaDirect elaborates on this slackness that needlessly frustrates the population. syriadirect.org/syria-can-sp…

Always admire @GregoryPWaters work, hoping that he will write many more for @SyriaDirect - important read.
Rural western Homs was torn apart by sectarian violence during Syria's revolution. In Talkalakh, thousands of Sunni residents were displaced, detained, or killed by regime militias. Yet after liberation, this area has seen a gradual return of peace and security. My first for @SyriaDirect looks at how residents, civil society, and local officials have come together to rebuild inter-faith relations in this town. Talkalakh is another example of how powerful local initiatives can be, but also how fragile civil peace remains in post-Assad Syria. syriadirect.org/in-syrias-di…

In Syria’s Talkalakh, Sunni and Alawi neighbors are rebuilding ties after years of sectarian violence, displacement and looting. Local initiatives and security reforms have helped restore a fragile peace. But can it last without justice? Writes @GregoryPWaters for @SyriaDirect. syriadirect.org/in-syrias-di…

Today, the linguistic gains made by Kurds under the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration are unraveling, residents in northeastern Syria say. But how does one rebuild a state without a shared language between its citizens? My latest for @SyriaDirect: syriadirect.org/syrias-kurds…
