Our State of TB in South Africa report shows that 60.7% of people tested for #TB between April 2025 and January 2026 were girls and women, while only 39.3% were boys and men. This means only 65 men were tested for every 100 women despite men having higher rates of #TB and mortality.
This highlights a major gender gap in #TB testing where the group most affected by the disease is still the least likely to access testing services.
Government must strengthen targeted #TB screening for men, expand community-based testing and ensure accessible, stigma-free health services that encourage early diagnosis and treatment.

Presenting findings from the first year of South Africaโs National TB dashboard at the @TBThinkTank_za webinar, Dr Medina-Marino said testing targets alone do not show whether testing is reaching people most affected by #TB.
He stated that between April 2025 and March 2026, 3.12 million people were tested, reaching 62.4% of the five-million target. However, he also explained that the figures alone do not show whether testing is reaching the areas where it is needed most or how many people with #TB are being found. #EndTB

Community voices matter in the fight against #TB
People who experience #TB know where services are working, where gaps remain and what needs to change. These voices can inform #TB programmes, policies and decisions, improve outcomes and help make services more responsive to the realities of communities.
Government must include communities in shaping #TB policies, programmes and services that reflect their needs and experiences. #EndTB

#TB diagnosis should not depend on where you live or how far you are from a health facility.
Near-point-of-care testing is an important step towards making #TB diagnosis more accessible, especially for communities that face barriers to timely testing and treatment.
Bringing testing closer to people means reducing delays, supporting earlier diagnosis and helping people start treatment sooner. It also means exploring more accessible approaches, such as tongue swabs for young children who may struggle to produce sputum.

Why is near-point-of-care (NPOC) testing such a breakthrough for TB diagnosis in decades โ and what does that mean for communities most affected by the disease?
In 60 seconds, @GlobalFund TB expert Dr. Eliud Wandwalo explains how a new class of TB tests can bring fast, accurate diagnosis closer to where people live & seek care โ reducing delays and helping people start treatment sooner.

#Elections2026: For residents of Campbell, Limpopo, the best place to make a call for an ambulance is in a crime hotspot, just a kilometre away.
Ward 6 councillor Victor Manavhela, says Campbell had been without adequate cellphone coverage for more than 20 years.
Residents like Forget Ndou had to walk to the railway line to make emergency calls, for her sister who was in labour, despite the area being a crime hotspot, particularly at night.
A network tower has been approved, but construction has yet to begin.
Some Campbell residents are threatening not to vote in the upcoming November local elections unless the areaโs cell phone network problem is addressed.

The Health Ombud and @PSC_ZA have released a joint investigation report into the deaths of six healthcare professionals in KwaZulu-Natal public hospitals.
The report highlights systemic challenges affecting healthcare workers, including staff and equipment shortages, inadequate supervision, dysfunctional workplace cultures and insufficient employee support services. These findings raise important questions about healthcare worker wellbeing and institutional accountability.
In a discussion hosted by @doctors_rural, family physician Dr Adam Asghar and public health medicine specialist Dr Indira Govender unpack the reportโs findings and discuss what needs to change to better support healthcare workers.
Dr Asghar emphasised the need for institutional accountability.
โUltimately the interventions are for the Department of Health to take on and be accountable for. But I think what we as individuals can be accountable for is looking after ourselves and each other better.โ
Addressing these challenges requires more than individual coping strategies. Healthcare institutions and the Department of Health must take responsibility for creating safe, supportive working environments.
