Worth sharing the actual stats on this.
60% of teachers trained by @TeachFirst over the last 18 years are currently teaching.
82% of those who finished training last year, continued to teach.
TF’s retention is consistently improving.

Teachers! Would your school be interested and have the capability to participate in virtual careers outreach sessions? For example, professionals dialling into a classroom via video call to present on their roles and facilitate a Q&A? Keen to support schools but unclear if poss.
Thanks so much @russellhobby - a really interesting hour’s discussion covering all aspects of education, teaching, retention, policy, and how we can continue to support @TeachFirst’s mission!
“It should be a mark of pride to have spent some time in disadvantaged schools. What makes you a high flier is being put into a tough environment. This is one of Teach First’s distinctive contributions to the system (but no judgement to those who don’t stay)” - @russellhobby
What could be done to make teaching more balanced? “My mum was a teacher and single parent and she did it. That should be a right for everyone to be able to balance family and teaching. We need to drive out work/changes that have no direct impact on young people” @russellhobby
On teacher retention: “We want to make the experience so good that people don’t want to leave teaching. I do think that the key determiner is the leadership in your school.” - @russellhobby
“We’ve had 2,500 applications for the national tutoring programme from people with teaching qualifications - huge numbers who are not currently employed in teaching. There’s been some success in mitigating the pressures on teachers, but more to do on retention” - @russellhobby
“Lots of middle class families are setting up home schools with tutors, huge screens, and the money to send their children to clubs after that. We are looking at a potentially more segregated school system under Covid-19” - @russellhobby
But @russellhobby notes that there is a divide in digital access - something we need to strengthen as a country.
