This afternoon I had the opportunity to host our Data Center Town Hall: “Understanding the Debate, Empowering Our Communities” at Richland Library Main Branch. With so much conversation surrounding data center development in South Carolina and across the country, I wanted to create a space where residents could move beyond the headlines, hear different perspectives, ask questions and better understand both the potential opportunities and concerns associated with these developments. A special thank you to Congressman Ro Khanna for joining the conversation and sharing his perspective on this important issue, as well as to each of our panelists , Zakiya Mickle, Shane Kinloch and John Brooker for lending their expertise, insight and time to help our community better understand the complexities surrounding data centers. I was especially encouraged to see how far this conversation reached. We had attendees travel from as far away as Dorchester County to be part of today’s discussion, which speaks to just how important this issue has become for communities throughout South Carolina. Thank you to Richland Library for providing us with a space to have this important community conversation, and to WACH FOX and The MinorityEye for coming out to cover the town hall and help extend the conversation beyond the room. Most importantly, thank you to everyone who attended, asked thoughtful questions and remained engaged throughout the discussion. My goal was never to tell our community what to think, but to provide information that helps people ask the right questions and make informed decisions about what is best for their neighborhoods, families and future. Thank you to Mayor Lethonia Barnes for inviting me to visit Excellent Learning Pre-School in Florence yesterday. Hearing firsthand about the challenges facing this excellent center was concerning. After some families lost child care scholarships, enrollment dropped nearly 50%! Yet, the dedicated staff continues finding creative ways to serve children and families. Quality child care is not a luxury—it’s essential to our economy, working families, and children’s future. Without access to high quality early childhood education, too many children risk entering kindergarten unprepared to learn. Today’s child care crisis will become tomorrow’s K–12 education crisis if we fail to act! We must ALL advocate for affordable, high-quality early childhood education and sustainable funding for our child care providers.
