Not meaning to hijack the post but worldbuilding is fun and within my stories (for the unfamiliar, mandatory warning that it's very niche content) there is at least one AU of sorts where a magic system is featured. I could mention some stuff about it in several posts.
Elemental magic works like this: It allows the user to manipulate an existing source or to generate it using their Andekraft reserves. Water involves control of its 3 states including steam and ice, some may choose to specialize but the 3 are within the overall scope.

As a writer myself, I can only partially agree and I'd say that it should go on a case by case basis. Yes, character flaws ground them but it's not 100% compulsory to make everyone hateable to some degree UNLESS that is your intended tone for the whole narrative.

Okay, I think I had some more fun than I should have and I've been commenting on random stuff. Guess I should get back to the regular schedule though I should warn you guys that I'll still jump into the fray on LatAm/Mexico issues as deemed necessary. Not super political tho.
