Mario on difference between 1H and 2H: "Make shots." "Especially defensively, they changed the matchups a little bit and we should have exposed it and used it against them. But it turned out that they slowed us down and we kind of went away from Evan and Jared paint touches."
Honestly... watching back the second half and don't think the guards are totally to blame for how they handled the pressure. It wasn't pretty but the Cavs were getting open looks in the 3Q and to start the 4Q -- a lot of missed looks and too many mistakes. The Sixers pressure forced the Cavs to play differently -- more off of pressure instead of within set looks (and the Cavs were too willing to let it happen). The Cavs were not creating advantages on the catch like they did in the 1H and their pace was completely different (106 in 1H, 100 in 2H and 96 in 4Q). The Sixers picked up full court. Pressured every catch. Made the Cavs play on their heels. And were blitzing P&Rs involving Harden/Mitchell which put the onus on others to make plays -- which is a blueprint we've seen time and time again. Teams do not trust the Cavs ancillary players to beat the and know the Cavs handlers can get lulled into pressure and their scheme gets cast aside. Give the Sixers credit: They disrupted the Cavs offensive process and made everything a grind. In combination with running on missed shots/TOs, it felt like a boxer throwing punch after punch. 23 points in transition in the 2H compared to 3 points in the 1H for the Sixers. Also, 26 points off a defensive rebound in the 2H compared to 11 points off a defensive rebound in the first half. It was a snowball effect since the Cavs couldn't push off misses (since the Sixers weren't missing) and then attacking the Cavs off their poor offensive possessions -- subpar execution offensively for the Cavs led to easy offense for the Sixers. The Cavs were more opportunistic and aggressive in the first half: 5-for-8 on cuts/lobs + putbacks but then went 1-for-3 in the second half. Their rim FGMs also got cut from 12 to 7. Down the stretch in the 4Q is where Mitchell + Harden really struggled. They were on the floor for 19 combined minutes -- Harden had a 31.4% USG% but a 29.1% TOV% (at least he had 10 points on 4 FGAs), and Mitchell had a 28% USG% but a 29.6% TOV% with 2 points on 3 FGAs. Bottom line: The Sixers changed how the Cavs played offense and the Cavs were too willing to let it happen. And that's where your leaders have to step in.
