Recently, I started studying Life Sciences at the Open University, and I was very interested in combining the material learned with the field in which I work daily – cloud computing. I decided to combine image recognition, language models, and early detection of kidney issues. The goal is to try to identify renal dysfunction through a photo of a urine test strip. In this post, I’ve integrated the biological aspect, to explain the rationale behind the solution, alongside the technical aspect of image recognition – a field that is new to me – and the technological solution running in the cloud. Academic literature is very important for understanding, but these tools made it possible to take the basic idea and translate it into something practical, especially for someone who hasn't dealt with these subjects before (aside from cloud development). A true force multiplier that allows me to step beyond my traditional areas of expertise.
