Can I still apply Fall N? It is doubtful that soil conditions will allow any additional fall N applications. Cold weather dramatically slows soil drying. N knife cutting through wet soil will likely leave sidewall compaction, creating an avenue for some gaseous NH3 to escape into the atmosphere. Planting into a knife track with sidewall compaction next Spring may result in free NH3 burn. It does not take much NH3 to injure seedlings or root tips exposed to the trench. Tank pressure is significantly lower with cold temperatures. Consider the possibility of inadequate pressures pushing the ammonia out of the tank and into large manifolds, affecting distribution.

Basics of Applied Agronomy registration is now open for the course from May 8 to July 23, 2024, Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9:00 am. The course starts with Crop Mgt. to capture in-field learning between lectures. Next will be Pest Mgt. for the same reason. Nutrient Mgt. will prep. for fall fert. Season, and the last segment, Soil and Water Mgt. will prep. for tillage and cover crop decisions after harvest. Great way to prep. for customer service in 2024 as well as the CCA Exams.
