Crypto has a "credibility for sale" problem, and it’s costing founders their reputations.
We analyzed 2,893 press releases over four months to see how the "wire service" machine actually works. The results were worse than we thought: 62% of crypto press releases come from projects flagged as high-risk or outright scams.
Here is how the crypto press release distribution industry is laundering reputation.

The largest crypto exchange in the world just experienced the largest robbery in human history—and the person running it is a nomadic autistic man in Dubai posting “Funds are SAFU!”
What a time to be alive.
The other day a candidate asked me about the office dress code. should’ve just sent him this so he understand what kind of industry we work in.
Published a Claude skill that reads crypto announcements like an editor.
It does a few things, but mainly it checks one: does this announcement carry news?
Ran it on all 220+ October releases from 4 leading crypto wires. Only 10% passed.
11% weren't even about crypto
11% we're about events/awards
9% were trading promos
5% were "partnerships to explore"

The thing we've heard most from founders and CMOs for the past 6 months is "we want LLMs to cite us". usually followed by "and someone told us there's an easy way to do it".
@muckrack's May 2026 AI citation report says otherwise.
1/ Press releases went down from 6% of AI citations in December to 1.1% in May. Or, in other words, blasting a wire to hundreds of outlets isn't a GEO strategy.
2/ Journalism shows up in AI answers across every query type - from 18% in comparisons to 46% for industry trends. When someone's asking what's happening in your space, AI reaches for the news.
3/ 57% of cited journalism was published in the last 12 months.
Which is pretty much what every parent tells their kids - there's no easy way to do things. One big press release distribution won't move the needle. Showing up consistently will.

Crypto's biggest comms campaign of the year, and "crypto" barley made the cut.
Nearly 9 in 10 reporters have written stories that started with a pitch, and over half of them still won't reply to yours, which is not because "manual pitching is dead" but because your entire media strategy is a wire release and a 900-name spreadsheet called "tech journos final v4".
