JUST IN: Significant decision from the 10th Circuit: the 6 month "reasonable" period of detention for ICE detainees with final orders of removal does *not* reset over time. The Trump admin had argued the 6 months reset everytime ICE redetained someone. ca10.uscourts.gov/sites/ca10…

esp when the last several years have only demonstrated repeatedly how student journalists are breaking significant stories, covering things critically and thoroughly... smh
Hey @MTA any reason your press office has been treating student journalists like they're not real journalists? If your press team had time to send a condescending responses about how they don't deal with student journalists, surely, they could have just responded to the question.

I've never seen a press office do this in all my years doing/teaching, journalism. This is a very strange way to set the tone with reporters who 1. do good journalism/break stories for student pubs 2. freelance for a variety of local outlets 3. are the future of the press corps.

Homeland Security agents wanted to search an Atlanta protester's phone. So they detained him at the airport, cut him off from his lawyer, and lied to him that they were looking for "kiddie porn" and might let him go if he cooperates, govt documents show. reason.com/2026/10/21/homela…

Earlier this year, Sarah Chihaya was diagnosed with MSA—a terminal neurodegenerative disease. Right now, she can no longer read or write—this will be her last piece. And it's a brilliant one about Emily Brontë and unknowability. thenation.com/article/cultur…

New: We found cops who kept using Flock to spy on women after they left the force. One used it for five years after retirement, spying on his wife during a custody battle. Another ran searches while he was suspended (and later fired) after killing a 15-year-old boy. 🧵

OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. We categorically reject censorship - whether direct or indirect - and urge the government to change course, amending the legislation which has led us to this point of repressive absurdity.

I think it's a good idea for us to demystify journalism and show our work/behind the scenes as much as possible. So much of the public doesn't understand how journalism is done and that's on us, tbh.
We're trying something new at @nytimes: "The Backstory," a newsletter digging into Times journalism and decision-making. We also talk to critics and skeptics of The Times in a segment called "Sound Off." You can read our first edition here: nytimes.com/2026/10/15/insid…

I also think that that transparency should come with measures for accountability where applicable. If our process wasn't as clear/tight in a case or on an issue, we should audit and convey the results/corrective measures to audiences.

Twelve soldiers + police showed up in Taybeh olive field to stop a single Palestinian olive farmer from harvesting a single tree. After harassing him for 30+ minutes, a car full of some sort of special police officers stormed in and violently arrested the journalist/activist @the_andrey_x. One of the arresting officers shoved me, then showed me his bloody elbow and said I did it to him. (So if they take me next, that’s probably their pretense.) Second and third videos are other angle of the shove (including it here to be safe). Fourth video is from just before—the major military operation to stop a farmer from picking olives. Fascist state.

I’ve been detained by the IDF, along with a group of rabbis & volunteers. We were simply harvesting olives in a grove near Nehalim in the West Bank. The occupation is a crime under international law. Harvesting olives isn’t a crime under any law I know.
