It’s actually crazy how you grow up thinking home-cooked meals every day are just normal, then get older and realise how much time and effort it took your Mom to make that happen and how lucky you were to have that.

UPRI-NOAH is teaming up with the UP Department of History to dig up Metro Manila’s lost waterways, tracing rivers, esteros, and water channels that have disappeared, narrowed, or been buried beneath the city. These are some of our team’s initial discoveries: 1. We have an 1826 topographic map 😲 covering Manila, Makati, and parts of Malabon, Caloocan, Navotas, Valenzuela, San Juan, Quezon City, Pasay, Mandaluyong, and Pasig. This is a remarkable historical window into how the landscape and waterways looked nearly 200 years ago. 2. Taft Avenue was once a considerably large waterway. 3. The Manila Yacht Club is located at the river mouth. 4. Estero de Pandacan used to be remarkably wide, nearly as wide as the Pasig River. Its present-day form gives little indication of its former extent. Map courtesy of Real Kerbz Clado Alvarez

Far from a giant switch in a factory, AI kill switches seem like they may be hard to define and even harder to implement. What are they, and why don’t we have them when the people designing systems say they want them? spklr.io/6015ETwSx

I don't think that's a blunder from the stuff. It was intentional. As no internal stuff will hand over such documents without clear direction. And internal memo have clear instructions at the top (Internal memo/Official eyes only). Moreover, it would be in Chinese. Not in English

TIL that both “consider” and “desire” reflect a Roman obsession with stars, seen in their incorporation of the Latin sidereus or starry. “considerare” (look closely) literally means “to observe the stars” while “desiderare” (long for) likely means “await what the stars deliver”

PHYSICS NOBEL PRIZE 2022 SIGNS CLIMATE DECLARATION: "THERE IS NO CLIMATE EMERGENCY" CLAUSER & a global network of over 2,000 scientists and professionals have prepared this urgent message: Natural as well as anthropogenic factors cause warming The geological archive reveals that Earth’s climate has varied as long as the planet has existed, with natural cold and warm phases. The Little Ice Age ended as recently as 1850. Therefore, it is no surprise that we now are experiencing a period of warming. Warming is far slower than predicted The world has warmed significantly less than predicted by IPCC on the basis of modeled anthropogenic forcing. The gap between the real world and the modeled world tells us that we are far from understanding climate change. Climate policy relies on inadequate models Climate models have many shortcomings and are not remotely plausible as global policy tools. They blow up the effect of greenhouse gases such as CO2. In addition, they ignore the fact that enriching the atmosphere with CO2 is beneficial. CO2 is plant food, the basis of all life on Earth CO2 is not a pollutant. It is essential to all life on Earth. Photosynthesis is a blessing. More CO2 is beneficial for nature, greening the Earth: additional CO2 in the air has promoted growth in global plant biomass. It is also good for agriculture, increasing the yields of crops worldwide. Global warming has not increased natural disasters There is no statistical evidence that global warming is intensifying hurricanes, floods, droughts and suchlike natural disasters, or making them more frequent. However, there is ample evidence that CO2-mitigation measures are as damaging as they are costly. Climate policy must respect scientific and economic realities There is no climate emergency. Therefore, there is no cause for panic and alarm. We strongly oppose the harmful and unrealistic net-zero CO2 policy proposed for 2050. If better approaches emerge, and they certainly will, we have ample time to reflect and re-adapt. The aim of global policy should be ‘prosperity for all’ by providing reliable and affordable energy at all times. In a prosperous society men and women are well educated, birthrates are low and people care about their environment."

You know, Lord, the heart of the city: its lights and shadows, its noise and loneliness. Lord, may our urban communities be open and welcoming homes, places where hope is shared, where no one feels invisible, and where the joy of your Gospel shines in the hidden lives of so many brothers and sisters. Let’s #PrayTogether at popesprayer.va/praywiththepo…

Power utility giant Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said it would comply with the Energy Regulatory Commission’s directive to refund P9.5 billion in overrecoveries to its customers “Meralco supports initiatives of the government to provide relief to consumers and ensure that they benefit from any approved refund as quickly and transparently as possible,” Meralco senior vice president Jose Ronald Valles said in a statement. “To recall, it was Meralco that filed two separate applications for refund in 2025 and early 2026, covering the period from January 2025 to June 2025 and July 2025 to December 2025, respectively,” Valles said. | via @brixlelis
