There was a time in this country when people like me weren’t allowed to vote, much less hold office.
Tomorrow marks the 100th anniversary of the implementation of the Chinese Exclusion Act — a racist piece of legislation that prevented those of Chinese descent from fully participating in Canadian society.
Today, at the opening of the Chinese Canadian Museum, I had the opportunity to see the stories of those who came before me — those who came to this country to build a better life for themselves and their families.
To see the accounts of their struggles and achievements be told in such an impactful way is incredibly meaningful.
I look forward to seeing how this museum will illuminate those stories and showcase the countless contributions that Chinese Canadians have made to our city, province, and country.

Won Alexander Cumyow was a trailblazer. He was a lifelong advocate for civil rights and a leader in Vancouver’s Chinese community.
Naming the City of Vancouver’s new office in Chinatown after Won Alexander Cumyow would be a fitting testament to his legacy.
Today, we had an opportunity to celebrate him at the @ChinatownFdn Storytelling Centre and next week, Council will consider a motion to formally name the new Chinatown satellite office in his honour.
