Origins of Songhai Empire can be traced back to 7th-8th Centuries, with Songhai people settling around the bend of the Niger River. Initially, they were a small state among many others, but their strategic position along trans-Saharan trade routes allowed them to flourish. Empire began to rise in early 15th Century, following the decline of the Mali Empire, which had previously dominated the region.
Songhai Empireโs ascent to power was marked by the reign of several formidable rulers. The most notable among them was Sunni Ali Ber, who ascended the throne in 1464. A military genius, he expanded the empireโs territory through a series of conquests, capturing the important trading city of Timbuktu and establishing control over critical trans-Saharan trade routes. Following Sunni Aliโs death, Askia Muhammad Toure came to power in 1493 after a coup. He is remembered for his administrative reforms and efforts to consolidate the empire. Under his rule, the Songhai Empire reached its zenith, stretching from the Atlantic coast to what is now northwest Nigeria and encompassing large swaths of the Sahara Desert.
Songhai Empire was a center of Islamic learning and culture. Cities like Timbuktu and Gao became hubs for scholars, poets, and artists. University of Sankore in Timbuktu was one of the worldโs leading educational centers, attracting students and intellectuals from across the Islamic world. Economically, the empire thrived on trade. Gold, salt, kola nuts, and slaves were among the commodities exchanged along the trade routes. Empireโs prosperity was also based on sophisticated farming techniques and ironworking, which allowed it to sustain a large population.
Politically, Songhai Empire was a monarchy that was also deeply influenced by Islamic law. Empire was divided into provinces, each governed by a governor appointed by emperor. Society was stratified, with a clear hierarchy ranging from nobles and free citizens to slaves. Songhai also had a well-organized military, which was key to their expansion and defense. Military was composed of cavalry and a fleet of war canoes that patrolled Niger River.
Decline of Songhai Empire began in late 16th Century. Internal strife weakened the state, making it vulnerable to external threats. The empireโs fall is often attributed to the Moroccan invasion in 1591, when a Moroccan army equipped with gunpowder weapons crossed the Sahara and defeated the Songhai at the Battle of Tondibi. Following this defeat, the empire disintegrated into smaller states. The loss of control over trade routes and the internal fragmentation led to a period of economic decline and political instability.
Songhai Empireโs impact on the region was profound. It was an economic powerhouse that facilitated trade across the Sahara and sub-Saharan Africa. Its cities were melting pots of culture and learning, preserving and contributing to Islamic scholarship. The legacy of the Songhai Empire is still evident today. Many of its architectural achievements remain, and the tales of its rulers and scholars continue to be a source of pride and inspiration for people in West Africa and beyond.
In conclusion, the history of the Songhai Empire is a testament to the dynamism of African civilizations. Its sophisticated governance, economic might, and cultural achievements stand as a reminder of the continentโs rich and diverse heritage, which continues to shape the historical narrative of Africa.

Woah!!! The FTC is going there!
So excited to see the FTC launching a full study into how companies use data to serve different prices to different people.
We know the incentive and capacity is there, but the reality of surveillance pricing has been a triple-locked black box!
With a 5-0 unanimous vote, FTC launched a 6(b) study issuing orders to 8 middlemen companies to understand how surveillance pricing works as companies are increasingly using troves of data & algorithms to determine different prices for different people: bit.ly/4bUrkrA /1
