It is important to work vs full court pressure defenses for a short time early in each practice season, BUT…..
…… You need a simple approach that is easy to learn & use.
I made ours from our Lane Assigned Fast Break Attack using a 2-1-2 spread set with simple adjustments.
If interested in how I did this, check out my Manual, “Don’t Press Your Luck” and see how one set can cover all.

Preparing for early season Press Offense, I felt it was important to do a little every practice. BUT…..
I used a simple approach with our Running Game, assigning lanes, that shifted to a 2-1-2 spread setup, used slight adjustments for each defense, so it was easy to learn.
As pre season basketball practices are in full swing, one thing I like to remind Coaches to do:
Work 10 minutes on handling full court pressure. Every Day.
Do man press one day, zones on others, using various types so nothing will be a surprise to the team from game 1 on.
For some tips on the simpler approach to attacking all types of full court and half court pressure defenses, check out my popular Manual - “Don’t Press Your Luck.”

How do you encourage “Unselfish Play?”
You talk about it,
You encourage it,
You correct it when it’s not happening,
You praise it when it does happen.
Without it, you don’t have much of a chance to be the “best you can be.”
KEY TO A GOOD FAST BREAK:
A point guard who will pitch the ball ahead to open lane runners instead of dribbling up themselves all the time, is a key to getting teammates to run lanes. Use them or lose them.
The 1st thing you need as a young head coach is a Simple & Effective Man to Man Defensive System.
That’s how you build a winning program. Start with Stops! Defense should be more consistent than your Offense ever can be.
Simple Offensive Scheme is next & build from there.

Dre(mond) Greenlaw lost his head there in the 1st half against Seattle and got tossed from the game, hurting the defense some. But others seem to come through and the 49ers pulled out a win. Evans - Stud.
I guess that “Weather Schedule” the Red Sox & Cubs had last weekend did not do them much good in the playoffs last night.
A double header Friday, Saturday off to fly to Florida play a final game on Sunday.
Both teams got shut out big:
Yanks 9 - BoSox 0
Padres 8 - Cubs 0
The Cubs, with the NL MVP & the top offense in the NL, added 3 starting pitchers & their eventual closer at the trading deadline. They then went from 3 games behind the Brewers, with a home WC basically cinched, to 14 games behind the Brewers & a WC on the road in 2 months time.
What I observe in HS games about the Bigs:
1. There are some good Bigs out there, tall, athletic, good touch.
2. Most perimeter players are not looking inside to get Bigs the ball.
3. The Bigs’ footwork & moves are often lacking which results in low pct shots.

I never really had much trouble getting a bigger kid to play the post. For one thing, I had a reputation of training them well & was known for using them as the 1st option & center of the offense.
It didn't hurt either that we had 26 All League Bigs in my 25 years as a HS coach.
I lasted for 35 years in coaching at the HS & college levels for two basic reasons:
1. I basically ran the same Man to Man Defense every year. Obviously I refined my teaching methods over time.
2. I featured an Inside-Out Offense that I adjusted to fit the personnel each season.
Decades ago, before the shot clock, basketball was a slower, lower scoring game of patterned offense & half court defense. Coach Wooden changed that for many with his full court pressing & faster pace.
A 2-2-1 zone press forced tempo & turnovers, which increased the scoring.
They didn’t sub much back then, and there were no Media Time Outs every 4 minutes on the clock to rest up like college ball has today. Pressing caused fatigue & lesser conditioned teams eventually fell to the pressure.
Situational Pressing is used more today, but still effective.
The reason Situational Pressing works well today is players don't see a lot of it, it's used mainly in end of game high stakes situations, AND, Coaches don't spend enough time teaching players how to handle pressure in their practices.

The 49ers play the Rams in Melbourne this Thursday. I was in Melbourne 3 times in a 4 year period several years ago doing basketball clinics for coaches & players.
My hosts, Paul Lankford & the late Charles Ryan were most gracious touring me around Melbourne. Loved that area.
