Four years ago today, we pitched Chowdeck at YC Demo Day. It’s crazy how quickly time flies and even crazier how much can change in four years. For one, my hair is longer 😂 😂😂 But more importantly, @chowdeck has grown far beyond what any of us could have imagined back then. In the video, I was so proud of delivering 800 orders in a day. Today, we do that every 15 minutes. And yet, it’s still Day One 🚀

We have heard this over and over again, but what are the practical steps beyond despair? I think that while entrepreneurship by a few cannot change Africa, entrepreneurship by many will make an impact. Industrialization happens because funds are provided from aggregate wealth and savings to the best of us who are willing to take the risk. It still comes down to entrepreneurship, but on a larger scale. We are still borrowing from people who don't want us to make progress, and they are putting a risk premium on their loans. This is why Afrexim, AFC, AfDB, and other African lending institutions are now very important. We need to take our future into our hands. We have to produce at scale and also save a lot, and, as rightly said, good public institutions are the catalyst. Great African-owned financial institutions are also very important. I don't think any magic will suddenly happen in Africa beyond self-realization and gradual collective action.I still have a lot of faith in entrepreneurship, but we need to be better organized, both commercially and politically.
Hurts me to say this: Africa will not be saved by entrepreneurship. We cannot vibecode ourselves into the 4th industrial revolution. We still need to industrialize. To achieve this, we need stronger and better public institutions. We need extremely competent leaders at the helm.

Nigeria's health data problem was never that it doesn't exist. It's in thousands of folders, registers, and shelves across every primary healthcare centre in the country. The problem is making it usable. We just took our biggest step yet toward solving that.

The knowledge that makes AI useful is diffused. It lives with scientists, engineers, clinicians, firms. For AI to benefit from distributed knowledge, it must itself be distributed. Agree with Jensen that this is a future worth building.
For my first post, I’m sharing a letter @NVIDIA signed on why open models matter. AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country. Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty. The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models. images.nvidia.com/pdf/Open-W…

The best advice I heard from a stranger was this: give luck more opportunities to bump into you. Leave the house, take a different road, travel, say yes to new experiences. The more you do, the more life surprises you in the best ways.

The point of a startup is to make usable technology for others. When you make software, you have to watch at least 10 people use it. Sit next to them and say absolutely nothing. Force yourself to marinate in the failure of your product design. Every version 1 of any software will be absolutely destroyed by first interaction with users. You need to watch your new creation be absolutely misunderstood by users to reform version 1 into the one that actually works. There is only one path: figuring out where the sharp edges, the places people get caught, the assumptions you make as a builder that turn out to be wrong, and then relentlessly sanding it down so that anyone can use it. That is good design. That is the key to a good product. There is no shortcut for this. WATCH USERS AND CRINGE AND THEN FIX IT. SAND DOWN THE EDGES.

An initial startup idea can't usually be both grand and precise. In practice they're usually either grand and vague or precise and small. Precise and small is better. You know who your initial users are, and you expand outward. With grand and vague you can't even get started.

David in the Bible fasted and wept for his sick child but as soon as the child died he dusted himself up and moved on. A great lesson for doing your best when there's hope but recognizing when death has arrived and moving on quickly.

When you lack capital, time is the only currency you have left to spend. You cannot afford to waste it on cheap dopamine. Every single hour spent scrolling social media, playing video games, or watching television is an hour you could have spent learning something that the market actually pays for. You must become ruthless with your schedule. Selah!

The users who complain about the flaws in your product may seem annoying, but they are on the whole probably your most valuable users. They complain because they care, and I doubt a startup could ever get really big without users who care a lot about the product.
