MUSIC INDUSTRY PRO TIP - following up without being annoying is a superpower. Most people in the music industry are overwhelmed (even if they don't know it lol) We're all trying to stay on top of our text messages, missed calls, Slack messages, DMs, FaceTimes, and more. It's easy to miss things! I've seen first hand how simply following up can lead to opportunities with someone who simply missed the first message. Or maybe they saw it, meant to get back to you, and forgot. Following up pushes the ball forward and keeps you top of mind. It's genuinely one of the most important skills I've learned in my 12 year career!

Everybody wants the business. Jermaine Dupri goes back to the one thing that truly matters. Did you write a hit?

I asked a longtime day-to-day artist manager, who has worked with several superstar acts over 20+ years, what people don't understand about the job: "Your job is to improve the human experience. My primary concern is the psychological well-being of the artist and their team."

Doechii’s the last emerging artist to use a mixtape as a springboard to stardom. It used to happen often. Drake, Weeknd, Frank Ocean, A$AP Rocky, Chance The Rapper and Bryson Tiller did it in the 2000s/2010s. But the phenomenon rarely happens now. Why?

Just watched a producer cross the $3 Million mark from publishing. No billboard Hot 100’s, no RIAA Plaques, no crazy “co-pub” deal. How? Well, he owns 100% of his work via an admin deal, and also has 100% composition ownership since he uploads instrumentals to DSP’s. The major music industry doesn’t care because it doesn’t feed their business model. But it does feed him and his family ❤️ So my question is; are you seeking recognition and approval from your peers, or do you wanna build a long term career that can feed generations to come?

She’s absolutely right. Even before AI, music has been training the GP to accept “perfect” vocals, “perfect” programming, “perfect” production. This has been my issue with CB’s music. It’s why people can’t tell when they’re listening to AI now. Also, Natanya is a star.
Natanya (@n4t4nya) says the rise of AI is an unfortunate symptom of a trend in recent years towards imperfections and human flair being removed from music. "It's the symptom of something really wrong that we're getting tricked [by AI], because we've been conditioned to appreciate and accept music that doesn't have human flair in it, which I think is awful,” she says. ”Even in the way that we track vocals, we try and blur out all of the imperfections, and vocal coaching is now about being completely on pitch, rather than the feel, which is kind of stupid.” Natanya’s new album ‘ATTITUDE ERA’ arrives on September 20.

The system has gatekeepers. Artists aren’t trying to cut everyone out. They’re trying to understand the game before the game taxes them. Relationships still move records and infrastructure matters. Learn the system, then decide who belongs in yours.

25 years ago today, we lost Aaliyah. In seven years she changed the sound of R&B, and the blueprint she left is still everywhere in the music today. She was only 22.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library non profit has been responsible for getting millions of books in young peoples hands over the years for free. They were a huge supporter of Hair Love and I encourage you all to check it out and encourage people who may benefit to sign up.

Dolly Parton wrote 'I Will Always Love You' in 1973 and turned down Elvis rather than give up half the publishing. Twenty years later, Whitney Houston took it to No.1 for 14 weeks and made it the biggest-selling single by a woman in history.
