The bar for originality has never been lower, that's why when Levi's updates its logos after being covered up for the World Cup people delight in the novelty. Or when Kraft comes up with a TSA compliant ranch bottle because of viral moments that happened online. How will AI ever compete with that?
This week @TheCopyTrail and I chat about how to stand out by being terminally online and and two examples from last week that my Monsters Inc. Theory of Marketing (joy compounds, rage doesn't) is a lesson brands everywhere should be focused on with the Obama and Mamdani speeches.

I hated the DoorDash x T-Pain collab because I was annoyed by the manufactured outrage. I'm just so over rage-baiting and think we need to follow the Monsters Inc. Theory of Marketing:
Before the monsters discovered laughter gives 10x the return, it made sense for them to harvest screams because they thought fear was the most powerful fuel. Now that we know that joy, happiness, and nostalgia can create greater brand affiliation without all the negative feelings, brands should move you toward a joyful reaction, not just any reaction.
Thanks to @TheCopyTrail for the conversation around why we loved the Obama and Mamdani speeches vs the fail of Doordash.

In Bruges is such a special film. I don’t even know what to compare this to - it stands alone as a totally original film. Martin McDonagh wrote a script that’s both hilarious and emotional & gives way to great performances from Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson & Ralph Fiennes.

A few weeks ago we ran a brand survey for a B2B company selling into mid-to-enterprise.
They weren’t sure if it was worth doing.
“Feels like no one’s buying right now.”
“The market’s quiet.”
“We should just focus on capturing demand.”
That thinking is common — and it’s usually backed by the stat:
Only 5% of your market is in buying mode at any given time.
But the results told a very different story:
79% of respondents were either actively buying or planning to
56% planned to make a purchase in the next 90 days
It wasn’t that nobody was in-market.
It’s that they weren’t being remembered.
Buyers knew their competitors. Recalled their names. Couldn’t name them.
Not unaided. Not even when prompted.
It reminded me of something I saw recently in a Replit dashboard:
A long list of platforms.
Color-coded bars for recognition.
Dozens of brands.
But some? No name shown at all.
Just empty space.
That’s what invisibility looks like.
That’s what brand neglect leads to.
Here’s what I took away:
Just because you’re running ads doesn’t mean you’re showing up
Just because you’re in the category doesn’t mean people remember you
And just because you have a performance team doesn’t mean you have demand
Surveys like this don’t give you attribution.
They give you context.
And sometimes, that context is the only way to figure out why your funnel feels dry.
Not everything needs to lead to a demo.
Sometimes it just needs to lead to a memory.

Don't be surprised when products built to let you scale low quality content (giving the people who get to those pages little to no value), treat you the same way they've enabled you to treat your potential customers...
Give just enough value to look like you care about helping the customer, but really it's about doing the minimum level of work necessary to get paid.

The new GPT developments are exciting, but don't confuse convenience for creativity. Otherwise LLM dependence is going to f you in the a.
Here's why.
👇
People are makers.
Our emotions and thoughts and experiences and biases and flaws – consciously and otherwise – shape and remix the things that influence us.
We borrow bits and pieces from those who came before. And then, critically, we spin up new interpretations that carry a part of us in them.
A new body for a conjunction of souls.
LLMs do not. Even at their best, they do not add a layer of 'newness' or anything that you do not explicitly ask for.
They're cold, emotionless entities devoid of the richness and imperfection of human creativity.
The absence of human neurons firing in pursuit of that evolution perverts the concepts of inspiration and creativity.
It's why LLMs can never be equal participants in the human experience. They lack taste. They have nothing to draw on that adds value.
With every update, we trade away more of that humanity and creativity, instead of applying the new tech to functionality.
Maybe we'll get to a point where you can put a helmet on and have AI read your mind to create something tangible.
Not just strictly a rehash of what has come before, but with a layer of your soul and personality and history.
For now, LLMs are the world's most advanced photocopiers.

Most smart and talented people who dismiss AI aren't stupid or arrogant - they're just way better at what they do.
I call it the Law of Average AF: The further you are from the middling middle where AI lives, the stronger your reaction will be to its output.
Can't write a lick of code? You'll be bowled over by how easy AI makes it to develop a basic app. A skilled engineer will sneer at it.
Terrible at copywriting? AI will turn your insights into a serviceable landing page. A talented copywriter will think it's crap.
AI can still help talented specialists with peripheral work - prep, analysis, gut checks. Just not the craft itself.
Will things change? Will AI get as good as specialist?
Probably. Maybe. Who knows?
I'm focused on what it can and can't do today. Until it actually gets there, conjecture and predictions are nothing more than shooting from the hip.

There's a lot of bluster and boasting and empty hype in AI right now. Chief among which is this notion that it will leave us all jobless.
I swear it feels like an appendage measuring contest at times.
But there's a ton of substance too, even for PPC and Google Ads. @EdLeake and I talk about it in our new video (see replies).
The trick is to find the discerning middle ground between ignoring it and thinking it's a savior.
One of my favorite uses is treating it like a sparring partner to check for gaps in my logic and thinking.
Really handy when you work solo and remote like I do.
Anyway, watch the video. Cool editing and some nifty ideas too.
