I just finished a lesson with a middle school shortstop. He loves watching Roch Cholowsky and Bobby Witt Jr. So before we started taking ground balls, I asked him: "When you watch those guys play shortstop, do you think they're hoping the ball DOESN'T get hit to them... or do they want the ball?" He immediately said: "They want it." He started telling me about watching Bobby Witt Jr. dive all over the field trying to make plays. I said: "Exactly. Shortstop is a mindset. You have to WANT the baseball." Then we started taking ground balls. At first, he was locked in. But after a few reps, his focus started slipping. His feet weren't as good. He wasn't fielding the ball as smoothly. So I stopped. I told him: "I'm going to keep coaching you, but I'm not hitting another ground ball until you tell me you want it." So I stood there. And waited. Finally, he looked at me and said: "I WANT THE BALL." I hit him a ground ball. Smooth. Again: "I WANT THE BALL." Another ground ball. Smooth. We kept doing it. Before every rep, he had to say out loud: "I WANT THE BALL." And something changed. He became more aggressive. More focused. More confident. He wasn't waiting to see what the baseball was going to do anymore. He wanted it. And his body started playing like it. Because there's one thing I've learned from playing this game: Your body often follows the attitude you bring into the rep. If you're thinking: "Don't mess up." "Don't boot this ball." "I hope they don't hit it to me." You're already playing defense against yourself. But when your mindset becomes: "Hit it to me." Everything changes. Your focus. Your anticipation. Your confidence. Your aggressiveness. So if you're a young shortstop, here's your challenge: Before your next ground-ball session, don't just get into your ready position. Look at your coach and say: "I WANT THE BALL." Then go prove it. Because great shortstops don't hope the ball goes somewhere else. They want the opportunity to make the play. Thank you for reading. - Jermaine Curtis P.S. - If you enjoyed this, and thought it was helpful, share it. (This tells me you want more content like this)

Velocity Infected. A lot of college freshman pitchers regret believing the hype. They realize they throw as hard as the upperclassman, but then realize they forgot to learn how to actually pitch and hold runners. More colleges are utilizing common sense and recruiting athletic pitchers with fundamental deliveries and arm actions, knowing it's easier to add velocity, than it is to teach moxie, feel and command. Pitchers If you want to walk into a D1 school and pitch as a freshman, you better be polished, and be able to command the baseball. Upper 8's with command is much, much, much better than mid 9's with below command. Below average command gets coaches fired.

Read this, save it and re-read it. It’s important to take something away from the guys before you. If I could stress one thing, it would be to let go and enjoy the ride. Comparison is the thief of joy stop worrying about opinions. The grind will teach you so much about yourself.
At 20 years old, I made it to Triple-A. I thought I was on my way. 8 months later, I was on the back fields of Extended Spring Training trying to figure out if my career was slipping away. In 2005, I found out I had been pitching with a torn labrum for nearly half the season. I had surgery that October. Everything changed. I went from a high draft pick moving quickly through the system… To rehabbing. From being in the conversation… To feeling like I wasn't even in the plans. And that's when baseball taught me one of the greatest lessons of my life. Eventually, nobody is coming to save you. I had two choices. I could tap out because the game had me in a chokehold… Or I could keep fighting. Keep believing. Keep finding a way. And somewhere in that struggle, I started learning who I actually was. Not who I was when I was a high school draft pick. Not who I was when I was pitching well. Not who other people thought I was going to become. Who I was when things weren't going my way. I kept playing. I kept fighting. And when my playing career eventually ended, I could look myself in the mirror and know one thing: I gave the game everything I had. And looking back now, some of the most valuable things baseball ever gave me didn't come from the good years. They came from the years that damn near broke me. Resilience. Perspective. Work ethic. Faith. The ability to get knocked down and keep moving forward. So to every young player worried about where they fit in, getting offers, velocity, playing time, or what somebody else thinks about you: Believe in yourself. Because there will probably come a point when this game stops telling you how good you are. And when that day comes… YOU better already know who you are.
