The Senate Ag Committee passed its Farm Bill without the "Save Our Bacon" Act — thanks to public opposition. ‼️📢 But the fight isn't over. The full Senate could still add language that puts animals back in cages. Keep the pressure on. Call your Senators now and tell them to leave the Save Our Bacon Act out of the final Farm Bill.ae.onl/organictw-farm-bill

Bravo Senator Schumer! Thank you!
I OPPOSE the Save Our Bacon Act and any attempt to jam it into the Farm Bill. This bill would gut state food safety and animal welfare laws, wipe out voter-approved protections, and strip states like NY of the right to set basic standards. It's a giveaway to Big Ag and meat monopolies, punishing family farmers who followed the rules, while giving the biggest corporations more power to squeeze farmers and families. Congress should be lowering food costs, not rewarding the monopolies driving them up. The Save Our Bacon Act does not belong in the Farm Bill, and I will fight to keep it out.

The pork industry lost with voters. Lost at the Supreme Court. So they turned to Congress—and got the "Save Our Bacon" Act buried in the House Farm Bill. It's the biggest rollback of animal welfare protections in U.S. history. A thread. 🧵

Why is compassion only for some? @Unilever promised a cage-free future for ALL hens, but they’ve left millions behind. Progress in the US is great, but it’s not enough. We need a global change, not just a local exception.🚫🥚Take action: takeaction.openwingalliance.… @TheHumaneLeague

Rest in peace to the groundbreaking and absolutely legendary environmental researcher and tireless animal advocate @janegoodallinst who passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 91. ❤️‍🩹 @janegoodallinst has said: “Dr. Goodall’s discoveries as an ethologist revolutionized science, and she was a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of our natural world.” Her impact on the world will certainly be remembered for decades to come. #vegan #janegoodall #drjanegoodall #plantbased #sustainablity #sustainable #vegansofig #janegoodallinstitute #environmentalhero

The Clifton Times, a local newspaper in New Jersey, has reported on what most mainstream media outlets ignore -- protests holding local businesses accountable for animal cruelty. Thanks to editor and writer Tova Felder for this coverage and for noting that the cages that @TheHumaneLeague is protesting at @StopandShop "prevent hens from performing even the most basic natural behaviors, such as spreading their wings." cc: @CassidyGrom #plantbased #vegan #AnimalCruelty

This year, a Georgia court sentenced a man who abused 107 dogs to 475 years in prison. Also, this year, US factory farms confined over 70 million pigs in equally abusive conditions. None were prosecuted. Imagine if we enforced our anti-cruelty laws against all animal cruelty.

As veterinarians, we’re trained to evaluate the scientific evidence objectively. 👩‍⚕️ In beef systems (not beef on dairy), calves stay with their mothers for months. We don’t routinely see calves being trampled or mothers “forgetting” their offspring. Maternal bonding, nursing, and protection are well-documented behaviors in cows. 🐄 Yet in the dairy industry, we’re told early separation is “for the calf’s safety” or “health.” If that were the whole story, why does the same species—managed differently—show no such need for routine separation? 📚 Peer-reviewed studies show that separation increases stress responses in both cows and calves. 💡 The difference isn’t the animals. It’s the production model. In dairy, mothers were genetically selected to produce more than the calf needs. It's also challenging to allow the calf to nurse while also taking the mother's milk for sale. The calf can't run alongside the mother while she goes to the rotary milker, so the company can get its share of her milk. Veterinarians do not have to accept the talking point that separation is in the calf's best interest. We know that's not the case. It's in the company's best interest. Our oath calls us to work for the best interest of animal welfare. Questioning industry narratives is part of evidence-based practice. #VetMed #onehealth #veterinarian #dairyvet #vetstudent #vetschool

Factory farming is a classic race to the bottom dynamic. Once one pig farmer learned how to outcompete others by sacrificing animal welfare, all other pig farmers had to. Once one crammed more pigs in a barn by using gestation crates, cutting tails and teeth, and replacing straw bedding with concrete slats, they all had to. Many pig farmers tried to avoid this race. They almost all went out of business: the # of US pig farms fell ~85% since factory farming arrived in the early '80s. A few more hang on, selling to the small premium market that will pay for animal welfare. The pork industry often tells us to trust the farmers to treat their animals well. But the farmers don't choose how to treat their animals. The race to the bottom does. The only way to reverse this dynamic is for food companies and governments to set baseline animal welfare standards that stop the worst abuses.

This sounds insane to speak out loud, but is a real statistic: The global fishing industry kills at least 1 trillion wild fish every year to supply 1% of the world’s food.

It's hard to fathom the scale of factory farming. Factory farms today confine more animals globally than the number of humans who have ever lived on Earth. Just one factory farm in Iowa holds more animals than all US animal shelters and zoos combined.
