Good for the Dallas Cheerleaders.
A single bargaining unit with all the cheerleaders in the @nfl would be much more powerful.
Since they are employed by the teams, I assume this would require an employer association. Just like with the players.

Worked at Radcliffe Camera library today at Oxford. A LOT of church bells. Beautiful setting for deep thinking nonetheless.

If employers know the government can end a strike, why bargain fairly?
Canada's unions brought solutions to Parliament to address concerns about Bill C-39 and protect collective bargaining.

Massive congrats to my friend @IsabellaMWeber for her excellent new book out in the UK this week. We need it today more than ever. As many of us have been arguing, a different economy is possible—-but it must be fought for. Also great review in the @guardian today: theguardian.com/business/202…
In Glasgow today for launch of Professor Ruth Dukes project “LawAtWork”.
Very interesting listening to UK scholars and practitioners discuss systematic non-compliance with labour standards. Problems are the same all over.
Got my office at @LSELaw yesterday, down the hall from labour law legend Otto Kahn-Freund’s portrait. I’m a Visitor at LSE until next spring.
Nothing like London, LSE, and Otto Kahn-Freund to get you motivated to research and write about work law!
I’ve settled into Oxford, excited to begin my work at the Law School’s Institute for European and Comparative Law. Living in Summertown, just north of the city centre. Beautiful here.
This was my office this afternoon.
Tonight I went to Royal Albert Hall for the first time and it’s a spectacular venue.
We say @FirstAidKitBand with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Fantastic concert.
Someone would have to explain to me how the Bill violates any ILO Convention.
You’d need an actual instance of the Minister using it to quash a strike.
I don’t think there’s any question that THE RECENT USE of Section 107 by the Liberals contravenes Canada’s ILO obligations.
“If this bill passes unchanged, we will take our case to the ILO and ask it to examine whether Canada is living up to the international labour standards it has committed to uphold, ” says @Lily4Workers
Today’s the day folks. I’m leaving for my visiting professor gig at @OxfordLawFac and @LSELaw!
I’ll be running a PHD seminar at LSE and doing talks on comparative employment law (focusing on the law of dismissal) and comparative EU/Canadian labour law.
Expect Annoying photos.
Begun a sabbatical to finish book, begin a new multi-year SSHRC funded project on comparative Canada-EU work law.
If Canada built closer links to EU, what would it need to do to comply with EU labour law?
You’ll find me at @UniofOxford & @LSELaw where I’m a Visiting Professor.
My discussion of the Liberals controversial new labour law reforms.
All the federal government’s use of Section 107 does is bypass parliament and the democratic process of debating a Bill to achieve the same result slightly quicker.
It’s a very cynical tool.

Ontario public high school teachers are set to vote in November on whether they would be willing to strike, meaning all major education unions will now look to their members for strike mandates this fall.

Apparently the @MapleLeafs didn’t get the « elbows up » memo about supporting Canadian businesses and avoiding unnecessary travel to the USA.
Zero reason to be in Arizona a week before the season begins.
Recent destinations for Leafs training camp have been closer to home, like Gravenhurst or Bracebridge. thestar.com/sports/leafs/map…

The part of Bill C-39 that has attracted the most attention and criticism from the labour movement is the Liberal’s decision to double-down on the controversial use of Section 107 to end strikes by “email fiat."
Explainer by @TheLawofWork ⚖️perspectivesjournal.ca/c39-l…
An irony in #Bill39 is that the extended, mandatory conciliation in troubled bargaining relationships could have been introduced simply by using Section 107.
Unlike quashing strikes, more conciliation CAN be justified as an attempt to "promote conditions favorable to settlement"

Well, the government already claims that it has that power, so nothing fundamentally shifts with this new law.
Ultimately the courts will decide whether a single Minister can unilaterally decide to block the constitutional right to strike.
Experts say Ottawa's Building Canada Strong Act hands the labour minister and government 'unchecked' authority to suspend strikes based on 'national interest.' thestar.com/business/why-uni…

I’m heading to @westernuLaw to do a talk on professional sports collective bargaining tomorrow.
If sports and labour law are your thing, who knows, you might find my new article interesting:
