TMT, TMX, TM-WHATEVER: THE BUILDING DID NOT FALL BECAUSE OF THREE LETTERS. Every taxi in the park has EXPRESS painted on its side. Yet the journey from Kampala to Mukono, about 22 km by road, can still take three hours. Labels are a promise, not a performance. Steel is the same. After the recent Eastleigh collapse in Nairobi, photographs began circulating from the pancaked pile of concrete slabs and steel. The exposed bars then triggered instant verdicts on X, and we all suddenly became metallurgists. “They used TMT bars,” said some, while others insisted that TMX is the superior, newer steel. It is a confident argument over three letters, but the letters are not where the engineering decision is made. I know what salesmen from Ugandan steel companies tell us at the conferences they sponsor: TMX is the new thing. As if every building we put up ten years ago is now a death trap. TMX is not a separate standardised class of reinforcing steel. It is usually a trade label for a TMT bar made through a particular quenching system, commonly Thermex. A short history helps. We began with plain round bars, smooth as a politician’s promise and not very good at gripping concrete. Then came cold-twisted bars, which raised strength but reduced ductility and introduced residual stresses. The industry moved on, for good reason, to hot-rolled ribbed bars strengthened through controlled cooling. That is TMT: thermo-mechanically treated steel. As the hot bar leaves the rolling mill, water rapidly cools its outside, then heat from the still-hot core tempers the surface. The result is a strong outer zone around a tougher, more ductile core. TMX is one branded route to make that kind of TMT bar. TMT is not an old steel that TMX replaced; it is the family of steel to which TMX belongs. So ignore the fashionable three letters and read the rest of the stamp. On a marking such as B500CWR, 500 is the strength promise: a 500 MPa characteristic yield strength. The ductility class, A, B, C or D, tells you how much the bar should stretch and deform before failure, while W means weldable and R means ribbed. These are the performance classes recognised under EAS 412. TMX is not one of them. A stamp is the CV; the laboratory is the interview. In the laboratory, the bar is pulled until it breaks to establish its actual yield strength, tensile strength and elongation. It is bent and rebent to see whether it cracks, weighed per metre, and checked for chemistry, including carbon, sulphur and phosphorus. These are standard tests under EAS 412, and UNBS or a properly equipped university or materials laboratory can run them. You do not need a laboratory for the first screening check. Take a one-metre offcut and put it on a scale. A nominal 12 mm bar weighs about 0.89 kg, while a 16 mm bar weighs about 1.58 kg. There are permitted tolerances, but if yours is noticeably lighter, do not argue with the stamp; send it to me and buy popcorn and watch a storm. For now, as a developer, just ask for a mill test certificate for every batch, send samples for independent testing, and weigh before you pay. A “16 mm” bar that weighs like a 14 mm bar has quietly stolen your steel before the concrete is even mixed. Buildings rarely fall because of the name printed on a bar. They fall because poor materials, weak concrete, undocumented alterations, bad workmanship and empty inspection hide behind confident labels. The bar can say whatever it likes; only the laboratory can say whether it is true. @ecoconcreteUG leads with knowledge, material testing and evidence.

Kind of weird view to hold especially when you consider that this used to be one country with people moving up and down as they pleased, settling both sides of the Zambezi. Sometimes you have to question the mental of an average African.
With due respect, we have an infestation of Zimbabweans in Lusaka.🤕🤕

Replying to @TheMutaD
The way Ugandan doctors are helping us here, is something you can hardly imagine. They’ve established an Ebola treatment centre in Kasenyi, on the Congolese side of Lake Albert, and many positive cases are being referred there. The work they’re doing is truly appreciated. 🙏🙏🙏

Dear @qatarairways , It is unfair to keep flagging Ugandan passport holders over Ebola concerns when travel to Doha is involved, yet transit passengers are still permitted to fly. Ugandan travellers and businesspeople deserve clear communication, fair treatment @MinofHealthUG

Not enough for the gravity of his country's lackluster approach. At the same time, he needs to do more clarifications to clear some of the baggage disinformation that ends up associated with Uganda w.r.t Ebola.

Props to the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) for having provided the largest amount so far for the SGR project. Their funds are ring-fenced for the network's most complex infrastructure and key architectural assets: 553-metre Jinja Nile Bridge 2 kms Mbuya–Kampala railway tunnel. Passenger & Freight Hubs: Construction of six major railway stations located in Tororo, Iganga, Jinja, Lugazi, Kampala East, and Kampala City. Building three major locomotive and maintenance workshops in Kampala East, Jinja, and Tororo.
IsDB = €650m ($730m) OPEC Fund = €150m ($168.4m) AfDB = $650m commitment GOU = $460m from Sukuk bond, $75m already given to Yapi. Around $2bn pledged/secured/committed. Will the World Bank gives us the rest? Can't @GovUganda increases its share? Where's the $700m coming from?

I remember when Ebola first hit Bunia. People were skeptical at first, just like we're seeing in other areas today. But when it hit us hard and we lost so many people, we realized how serious it was. We learned the hard way that good communication and community sensitization are essential in fighting Ebola. Today, Bunia has made significant progress. Cases have declined, and some treatment centres are closing because they no longer have cases. Other affected areas need to learn from Bunia's experience. Prevention, community engagement, and clear communication can save lives. My biggest criticism remains poor communication. People need accurate information, not confusion.
Yesterday, a nurse was killed and a health worker severely injured after they were attacked while responding to an #Ebola alert in the town of Bafwasende, Tshopo province, #DRC. Our deepest condolences go to the family, colleagues and friends of the lost nurse. We also wish a swift and full recovery to his injured colleague who remains hospitalized. Everyone working to protect communities from this deadly disease must be able to work in dignity and safety. Healthcare must always be protected.

Uganda’s Minister of Health, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, has refuted claims by Swiss authorities that the woman who tested positive for Ebola after travelling from Uganda to Nigeria had no history of travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo. The minister accused the Swiss authorities of politicising the outbreak. He said officials are tracing the woman’s travel history and conducting genomic tests to determine where she contracted the virus. 🎥 Tonny Abet #MonitorUpdates

Jean Kaseya, head of @AfricaCDC won't say anything about this, because it is in his field state country, the DRC. HE WILL loudly shout about minor incidents in other countries. The DRC has over 10,000 Ebola cases

Not a word abt Uganda now. They thought their false claims linking Nigeria’s Ebola case to Uganda would go unchallenged, bt Uganda stood firm and demanded the truth. Uganda remains Ebola-free and no one should rush to blame Uganda for cases without credible evidence. Facts must prevail over propaganda.
Press Release FG PROVIDES UPDATE ON FCT EBOLA CASE AS GENETIC ANALYSIS SHOWS VIRUS IS RELATED TO VIRUS IDENTIFIED IN KENYA Abuja, Nigeria | 23 October 2026 The Federal Government has provided an update on the confirmed Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reporting that genomic analysis indicates that the virus identified in Nigeria is genetically related to the virus identified in a case in Kenya. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, said the findings provide important scientific information, while emphasising that further investigations are required to establish whether the two cases are epidemiologically linked. The genomic analysis was conducted by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and the Institute of Genomics and Global Health (IGH) at Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, led by Professor Christian Happi. Prof. Pate commended both institutions for their speed and scientific rigour, while reiterating that genetic relatedness between viruses does not, in itself, establish a direct transmission link between cases. Prof. Pate stated that identified contacts of the confirmed case remain under active monitoring. Some have tested negative, while results for others are still pending. The Coordinating Minister said the Federal Government was strengthening surveillance, laboratory capacity, case management, risk communication and infection prevention and control. Healthcare facilities have been reminded to promptly identify and report suspected cases to public health authorities, while additional training and sensitisation for healthcare workers will support the effective implementation of response protocols. In a related announcement, the Director General of the NCDC stated that the agency would begin issuing short daily updates to the public from 24 October 2026, in line with its public health guidelines. The updates will provide regular information as the situation evolves. The Minister urged Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant, observe all recommended safety precautions, follow official public health guidance and avoid spreading misinformation or unverified reports. He advised the public to obtain updates from recognised health authorities, including the NCDC, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to containing the outbreak, protecting healthcare workers and preventing further transmission, while calling for continued cooperation from the public and all relevant stakeholders.   Ado Bako

Brazil has repeatedly tried to clear out favelas and replace them with everything from middle-class neighborhoods to taxpayer-subsidized social housing. What happens every single time is that the affordable housing projects morph back into favelas within a few years, and when the government moves people out entirely and relocates them to new neighborhoods, the relocation sites themselves eventually turn into favelas. This has been going on since the late 1960s, yet every decade or so, government officials have this idea that favelas are just a product of poverty, when in reality they're a product of the people who live within them. It's like that meme video we've all seen of a beaver still trying to build a dam in someone's hallway using stuffed animals and cardboard boxes. You can take a man out of the favelas, but you can't take the favela out of the man.

Uganda built a wall using its experience in outbreak control to protect citizens first of all and by extension the region and the world. Instead of being up-lauded, encouraged and supported, it has been met with blanket restrictions and weak statements like yours @Dr_JeanKaseya ( have you considered what would be the situation if Uganda was not as experienced or slowed down cooperation with an obviously lukewarm international health system? Keep your statements to yourself.
I welcome the update from Uganda’s Ministry of Health @MinofHealthUG confirming that the country remains Ebola-free, while investigations continue into the recent Bundibugyo Ebola case reported in Nigeria. I commend Uganda’s continued vigilance, its cooperation with Nigerian authorities, and its important contribution to the response in DRC, including the deployment of health workers and support to treatment facilities. As transmission continues in DRC and the risk of further cross-border spread persists, close cooperation between our countries, timely information sharing and strong surveillance are essential. @AfricaCDC stands ready to continue supporting Member States in this collective effort.

They say geography is the mother of history, meaning the lottery of birth profoundly shapes the trajectory of our lives. Otherwise, why would I be so troubled by the walk-in help showing up with her 10-year-old daughter for paid chores? As a firstborn, house chores are second nature to me. With age and work, I’ve grudgingly outsourced them, with generous compensation. The lady referred to us is mature, hardworking, and clearly carrying heavy responsibilities. This weekend, she showed up with her daughter so they could tag-team and shorten the time. It’s just two of us in the flat, and we keep the place decent, so external help takes 2 to 3 hours. I was conflicted because child labour is wrong. But what was the alternative? Turn them away, well aware the family needs the wages? We have a whole State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, but I expect little policy guidance from her. They haven't done a thing about the children living on Kampala's streets.
