🌟 TURANDOT 🌟
📆 23-26 August
@TheOperaMakers present a radical and unnervingly relevant reinterpretation of ‘Turandot’. A British East & Southeast Asian company confronts Puccini’s last opera, exposing the harmful tragedy of online obsession.

So fun to hear forgotten music by women championed - and on the eve of the anniversary of being the first composition by a woman at the @MetOpera in 1902 (a trailblazer as the second was not ‘til 2016, the brilliant talk by academic @Chris_Wiley told us). Bravo @TheOperaMakers! – at Islington, London
Fantastic evening at Smyth’s Der Wald presented by @TheOperaMakers with our own @Chris_Wiley giving a talk on the composer before hand!

Sharing information here about the short-notice cancellation of our recent concert in Florida:
@dameethelsmyth was by all accounts a formidable woman. The Metropolitan Opera archives paint this very vividly:
"Miss Smyth … has attended all the rehearsals, has given to the singers minute directions, has advised with conductor Hertz on the proper reading of the score, ...
at 7 in the morning, phoned Grau’s hotel at 8, pleading that she had to catch the boat-train home at 11. Catch it she did, signed contract in hand. "I told him it was one act long and could fit on any sort of bill, in any kind of house." She brought clippings and...
box office statements from the record-setting London premiere with her. "You are certainly a businesslike woman," Grau said.
