⚠️ Warning. This is a triggering post about stray animals. I am sharing to build awareness and drive action. This is NOT an invitation to reply with other stories about the mistreatment of animals. You will be blocked. Puerto Rico has long had a stray animal crisis. Hundreds of dogs are regularly abandoned. Thousands never receive the vet care they need, nor are they neutered or spayed, resulting in endless litters of unwanted stray puppies. It's a constant cycle. There are now an estimated 650,000 stray dogs on the island of Puerto Rico. For context, that's how many stray and abandoned dogs are estimated to be left in the entire country of war-torn Ukraine. Puerto Rico is about the size of Connecticut. For years, local rescuers have run operations to rescue and rehome adoptable strays, called sato dogs, by flying them here to the mainland. Thousands of these dogs have been adopted into loving homes. After the pandemic though, the U.S is now experiencing an animal crisis situation with shelters that are over capacity, decreased adoption rates and an increase in animal abandonment. It's a horrible, heartbreaking reality. But the situation in Puerto Rico is now at a tipping point. And the government is looking at the most inhumane ways to solve the crisis, including poison, barbaric traps and even allowing the hunting of dogs on a notorious beach of abandonment. It has already begun. There is one organization, @TheSatoProject who has been helping to save dogs in Puerto Rico since 2011. They are committed to continuing a HUMANE approach to the crisis by providing vaccinations, mass spaying and neutering, alongside adoption. If you want to help, please read more about the work they do and DONATE. Thank you. 💔 🐾 #satostrong
