Delayed Wheat Payments Threaten Syria’s Next Planting Season
Government delays in paying for wheat are threatening Syrian farmers’ ability to finance the next planting season. Some farmers have been waiting for more than four months since they delivered the crops to the state in June.
The Syrian Grain Establishment (SGE), affiliated with the Ministry of Economy and Industry, has received around 2.75 million tonnes of wheat during the 2026 season, but so far has only paid 37 percent of the procured wheat. Officials have cited cash shortages and challenges by state banks to process payments. Part of the payments has been channelled through the Cham Cash application, but daily withdrawal limits have forced farmers to make several visits to withdraw cash.

Our readers include nearly every major institution, company, research body and professional services firm working on Syria. Some of you have been with us for all 25 years!
At a moment when polarisation and clickbait dominate, we’re still betting on reflective, data-driven, independent journalism. Thank you for betting on it with us. Here’s to another 25!🎉
On October 15, 2001, we published our first article.
Since then, Syria has changed beyond recognition. We reported through the final years of the old order, through an uprising that turned into war, through a decade of conflict, and now through a turning point no one could have predicted.
Through all of it, we kept doing the same work: more than 27,000 articles, company profiles, in-depth reports, official documents and tenders. Together they form one independent record of Syria’s economy, built one story at a time.
Today our team reports on the ground from Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Lattakia, Raqqa and beyond, with the same independence that has defined us for a quarter century. None of this would have been possible without you.
To every reader, subscriber and partner who has trusted us, some of you for all 25 years: thank you. Here’s to the next 25! 🎉
