The authoritarian playbook is simple:
Step 1:
Get elected saying the whole system is corrupt and you are the only person who can fix it so you consolidate power.
Step 2:
When the system of checks on your power be it other branches of government, the press, justice system or voters try to hold you accountable claim the system is trying to stop you so you need even more power. Therefore you need to get rid of those checks on your power conveniently removing anything that could hold you accountable.
This is exactly what we are seeing Trump do right now.
