Actors use scripts. Musicians use sheet music. Surgeons follow established procedures. Why are scripts for teachers treated as an affront to professionalism? @ehanford explains why Direct Instruction uses them.

We interviewed researchers, head teachers, teachers, literacy specialists, criminal justice experts, charities and, importantly, children & adults who have struggled to read. "Inside the Reading Gap" looks at the scale and depth of poor literacy in society, the impact on individuals and the social and economic costs. We also look at what schools must do to prevent thousands of functionally illiterate school leavers going into their adult lives ill-equipped for its challenges. Finally, we show that it's possible to teach virtually all children to read and the life-changing power that reading brings. It's challenging, but it's also a message of hope. We hope this trailer (sound on 🔈) resonates with you and helps you to see why good literacy for ALL underpins everything else in the education system. You can listen to all 4 episodes on our website (see bio) or wherever you get your podcasts.

This was a fantastic program for improving the quality of prison staff training, and I hope in the future that it- or a form of it- is resurrected. Huge praise deserved for @Nporter and her team for working so hard to make it happen.
Celebrating 10 years of @unlockedgrads and also the end of an era. Every single member of staff has stayed to the very end and I could not be more grateful to the huge support we have had over so many years to do something so incredibly hard, but so worthwhile. #ForeverUnlocked

The latest season of @ehanford’s #SoldAStory has particular resonance for me. The opening audio in episode 1 is of a preschool classroom in 1966. That’s the year I started school and was blessed to be taught (explicitly) by Mrs Enid R. I reconnected with Mrs R. late last year who told me “We didn’t call it explicit instruction in those days. We just called it teaching”. [Bonus points if you can find me below 😉 ]

History catches up with the education establishment in this important Season 2 of Sold a Story. Meaningful education advances could have been made in the last 50 years, as has occurred in other fields, where evidence is weighed more carefully and objectively. But they weren’t, and socioeconomic status continues to drive education outcomes, where classroom instruction should have the upper hand on this.

The closer you get to the impact of illiteracy in people's lives, the less you're willing to tolerate and stay silent about.

Remember: no evidence fidget devices help; some evidence they actually hinder.
Anyone else experienced "fidget devices" suddenly flooding a primary school?!

As a reminder, Wales launched the Foundation Phase in 2008. It was the proclaimed by the Welsh government as the "most radical policy" of any of the 4 UK nations. Inspired by Finland, this meant so-called "discovery learning" was the aim for all 3-7 year olds.

I’ve spent several years investigating education in Wales. Following this week's disastrous PISA results, we've made an @itvnews special reflecting on how Wales got here. The choices that reshaped our schools, the concerns over what children learn, and the fear things could get even worse. youtube.com/watch?v=1FSIfPjX…
