Highlighting the distorting influence of negativity bias in media and public opinion isn’t to say that there is nothing in the world to worry about. It is to say that one thing we should be very worried about is an information environment so warped by alarmism and neuroticism that we fail to form an accurate model of the actual problems, risks, and opportunities we confront.

Werner Herzog on psychoanalysis: “If you harshly light every last corner of a house, the house will be uninhabitable. It’s like that with your soul.” Only Herzog could make a metaphor about darkness sound this profound.

In many cases, you'll find the only thing preventing you from learning is your ego. No one enjoys feeling foolish, but attempting something new requires that you climb down from your perch and struggle as a beginner. You must ask questions that reveal your ignorance or attempt skills that make you look uncoordinated. Learning demands the willingness to live in a brief state of discomfort. You must believe that looking like a fool for an hour will not ruin your reputation for life.

When technology makes production more efficient, prices fall and consumers have more money to spend elsewhere. That spending creates demand for other goods and services, supporting employment in other industries.

AI could push back against public irrationality like conspiracy theories, fake news, & medical quackery. Whereas social media optimize for sheer engagement (clicks, likes, & reposts), AI is sold as a useful product that aids decision-making in the real world. For all the problems of LLMs, they're less likely to send users down a conspiratorial rabbit hole. This may restore the influence of epistemically responsible expertise. So argues the philosopher Dan Williams @danwilliamsphil open.substack.com/pub/persua…

Writing is the superpower of humankind. It is our truest form of magic. Writing allows you to conjure up something of value where nothing previously existed. It costs little for you to write down the lessons of your life and yet those few minutes spent writing can be life-altering for the right reader. As I once saw it put: "there is someone out there with a wound in the exact shape of your words." Furthermore, writing is the foundation of nearly every technology and innovation because we have to record what we know before we can build upon it. And these innovations are passed down from generation to generation, allowing our children to inherit a richer intellectual fortune than what we were born into. The world is richer because we write and nobody is made poorer in the process.

It's easy to dismiss economic growth as little more than a "line going up." But rising prosperity is closely associated with longer lives, healthier children, a cleaner environment, greater freedom, and just about everything else we value. In her latest book, The Grim Old Days, @chellivia describes what life was like before that sustained economic growth began.

Lijkt me een evidentie, toch?

Yes, body hair can be grafted to the scalp via FUE (called BHT), but not any hair. Beard is best (thick, good survival ~80%), then chest. Arms, legs, or pubic hair are poor matches—finer, shorter growth cycles, lower survival, and often unnatural look. Used mainly as a supplement for density when scalp donor is limited, not as the primary source or for hairlines. Results vary by patient and surgeon skill.
