Fun (not so fun) Fact: My brother had a very abusive second grade teacher that tried to convince the school that he was not only a low IQ child who needed to be in special education, but that he also likely had ADHD (then called ADD). Fortunately, my mom had him take the school district IQ test (Raven's Progressive Matrices) and also had his IQ evaluated by an outside child psychologist. Turns out, not only was he NOT special needs, but basically a genius. However, the local school psychologist was so convincing with her report that my brother had ADD, that my mom kept that narrative his entire childhood. My brother went through his entire school life and college career thinking he had unmedicated ADD. So as an adult, he decided to finally get help. My brother went to an adult psychologist to be officially diagnosed for the disorder (since he didn't have any medical paperwork stating his childhood diagnosis). Turns out, he did NOT have ADHD and he'd wrongly believed he had the disorder his entire life. It must be so strange to grow up believing your struggles with concentration, your abundance of energy, and your personality were all due to a neurodevelopmental condition you never even had. After that, he stopped making excuses for himself, buckled down, and became a doctor at 33.
