This is not controversial. Pope is a good coach. But he’s not elite. He doesn’t have a track record of high level winning. He is not a recruiting demon. He has not shown the ability to assemble an elite NIL roster. Some of his teams’ advanced metrics are pedestrian (especially defensively). He has never won a championship as a head coach at any level. Again, he’s a good coach. But hitting UK’s standard means competing for titles and doing that would be a total anomaly from his 12 years and more than 360 career games coached.
