You remember a city lawyer called Paul Gicheru? What really happened after he allegedly helped bring down the ICC case against William Ruto? On November 2, 2020, lawyer Paul Gicheru voluntarily surrendered to Dutch authorities, five years after the ICC had issued an arrest warrant against him. The warrant, issued in March 2015, accused him and another lawyer of corruptly influencing witnesses in the case against William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang. The case against Ruto and Sang had collapsed in 2016 after judges found that there was insufficient evidence to proceed. Gicheru was accused of bribing and intimidating witnesses to withdraw or change their testimony. He denied all charges and pleaded not guilty when his trial opened at The Hague in February 2022. On June 27, 2022, both sides presented their closing arguments, leaving judges to decide whether he was guilty or innocent. Then there was a final action. On September 26, 2022, Gicheru was found dead at his Karen residence in Nairobi, just as he awaited judgment. He was 50. An autopsy ruled out poisoning, but the circumstances surrounding his death attracted considerable public attention. On October 14, 2022, the ICC terminated proceedings following confirmation of his death. Was there foul play, or was it a natural death?
