British civil aviation from a heritage angle. Privileged to fly the B777 & previously the B737, B747 Classic & -400, B757, B767 & TriStar. Clearly more B than A

She’s away….possibly the most anticipated BA flight of the year, Dreamflight, has departed LHR for Orlando. I believe this is the 38th Dreamflight. Get following her, as BAW1DF on @flightradar24 and find out more info about Dreamflight’s mission here :- dreamflight.org/about/

Fresh in from Seattle last Thursday (15th Oct 2026), BA’s latest sub-fleet hull, G-ZBXA, sits in the engineering base at Heathrow before entering passenger service. She is BA’s first GE powered 787, and is a -10 with increased gross weights and therefore longer range.

An interesting development. First NASA, now Stratolaunch, have acquired a B777 airframe.
Stratolaunch has acquired a Boeing 777-200ER, expanding the fleet of carrier aircraft supporting our Talon-A autonomous, reusable, air-launched hypersonic flight test platform.   Read more about how the addition of the Boeing 777 aircraft expands our hypersonic flight test infrastructure, increasing global reach and flight capacity to address customer demand: stratolaunch.com/news/strato…

It’s only when you see the B777s flap mechanism extended close up that you can appreciate how strong and complex the structure is. This is Flap 30, but the reality is the inboard flap sections are at around 80°, creating extra lift and drag for those more limited length landings.

Early 1960’s and a RR Conway powered BOAC B707-436 on the apron in front of the newly build terminal and control tower at what was then known as Palisadoes Airport, Kingston, Jamaica. The photo comes from an Aerad (International Aeradio Ltd) chart guide brochure.

Around 15 mins until possibly the most significant rocket launch of the year, as a SpaceX Falcon Heavy launches the Roman Space Telescope from Florida. Launching at 12:26pm (UK time). Watch it live. Photo credit SpaceX m.youtube.com/watch?v=-8yDQh…

The B777, with her main gear doors open, doing an impression of a B52. It’s difficult to appreciate in a photo just how large these doors are, along with how cavernous each main gear wheel well is, unless you’re standing next to them. Each door must be 6-7ft tall.

Dawn at FL380 passing Dundalk Bay with Carlingford Lough, the inlet just to the north (left), which may be a familiar name to you if you ever listen to the coastal weather reports that follow the shipping forecast on @BBCRadio4 as supplied by the @metoffice

Jodrell Bank is the most visible causality of UKRI’s short sighted ‘vision’ for science, but as you’ll see below, there are many other valuable UK facilities and collaborations at risk. We became aware of the problem in the autumn of last year. It is not a result of the overall funding settlement for science after the spending review, which was quite generous I would say in the circumstances. Neither as far as we can tell is it a direct decision by ministers (all of whom have now gone in any case). Rather the problems appears to have been caused by senior management at UKRI focusing on short term economic ‘impact’ (whatever that means) rather than doing their job as custodians of the foundations of science. What must happen now is that the new ministerial team make the time (and space ;-)) to review the upcoming catastrophe, and instruct UKRI to do their job and focus on making Britain the best place in the world to do science, now and in the future.
The announced closure of the UK's largest telescope at Jodrell Bank is only a small part of the cuts in UK physics

This is the result of many bad legacy decisions taken by UKRI hastily and without proper consultation, overseen by a government department that no longer exists. Surely the new @andyburnham government will want to take time to review this.
🚨 NEW: The UK’s largest telescope for studying space is now set to close after the Government pulled its funding It supported various Apollo missions and tracked Soviet rockets in the Cold War

Last Saturday evening, whilst flying southeast bound over northern Italy, I saw probably the most intense lightning activity I’ve ever witnessed from a single CB. It was situated between Milan and Venice, off to our left. That’s one angry cell ! ⚡️ #lightning

Just a little over 2hrs until Starship’s flight 13 launches. Will SpaceX be lucky and get her away first time tonight ? 🫣 🚀

Absolutely pinpoint perfect flypast by the 9 ship Red Arrows (plus one taking iconic photos no doubt) at the NYC International Aerial Review. The “star spangled” smoke looked superb. Proper photos tomorrow once downloaded back in the UK. Thank you @rafredarrows for doing us proud

Happy Birthday America…🇺🇸 ….difficult to capture from a moving vehicle on a bumpy freeway, but the sky was on fire over Manhattan last night as we headed into town, with lightning streaked across the sky just as the sun set. #America
