Relatives said the job was ideal for Fangman, who loved international travel and fine food and wine. On 9/11, he was working aboard Flight 175 en route from Boston to Los Angeles. In the days and weeks following the 9/11 attacks, search and rescue dogs arrived at Ground Zero alongside their handlers. They searched through the debris for survivors and victims, worked long hours in difficult conditions, and provided moments of comfort amid an unimaginable scene.
German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Border Collies, and other breeds took part. Each brought a unique set of skills, working closely with their handlers and first responders throughout the operation.
Today, we remember these remarkable K9s and the people who cared for and worked with them. Their service is an important part of the story of the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.

In his 16-year career in emergency medical services, Lillo helped deliver 36 babies, one whose mother chose to name her son after him. For many of us, the memories of September 11, 2001, remain vivid – even 25 years later. But more than 100 million Americans are too young to remember that day.
As the history of 9/11 passes from those who lived it to those who learned it, our responsibility to remember has not diminished. Our vow to #NeverForget911 requires us to honor those who died and preserve the stories of sacrifice, heroism, and service for generations to come.
That’s the mission of the @Sept11Memorial, and I’m matching every donation to its Never Forget Fund, up to $25 million.
I hope you’ll join me in keeping our promise to never forget. bit.ly/4xEJSaJ
A quarter century later, remembrance remains a shared responsibility.
Each anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect and affirm our promise to never forget. This year, our Chairman @MikeBloomberg will personally match every gift to The Never Forget Fund— doubling your tribute.
The Never Forget Fund helps make it possible for students, educators, and learners of all ages to engage with the history and lessons of 9/11. Your support helps ensure that the people, stories, and history of that day continue to be remembered and understood.
Help extend the reach of remembrance and education for generations to come. Donate today: ow.ly/nLCe50ZKH4Q
