Every cradle of civilization based its existence on modified grass. Corn, wheat, rice, emmer, barley, oats, all grass. Grass didn't exist until the late Cretaceous and didn't spread until the Oligocene, 30 mya. The Great Filter is grass.

Film culture escaping IMDB's boomer/gen x tyranny and being given a new place for younger people to consolidate around has opened up an entire generation to different kinds of movies and if the cost is being forced to see teenagers posting annoying reviews it's a fair tradeoff
Replying to @staticbluebat
people who are too young to remember a world before letterboxd really don't understand. it's been the most significant positive force for cinephilia of the century. for all its faults, it has completely changed film culture for the better

I think Letterboxd is a convenient way to track what I've watched and see what my friends are watching
I hate Letterboxd. I will always hate Letterboxd. It's a toxic, performative place, full of tryhards and idiots. Your reviews aren't good. They aren't funny or wise. You are not erudite enough to articulate your written thoughts on a movie in a way that adds ANY public value.

Not really directly answering the question, but there are movies I think have bad scripts that I like anyway
this makes me wonder what the best movie with the worst script is. I guess without reading it you can't know for sure but it's an interesting question

I shoutout Frederick Spindler literally every time one of these comes up but if I have to pick one piece specifically probably this one:
Starting this up again! Name a piece of paleoart that had a large impact on you. This piece, by Douglas Henderson, showing a Rutiodon startling some Fadrosaurus, lives rent free in my head. The masterful use of light and dark totally stunned me as a child.

Polaris is "only" about 50 million years old. The non-avian dinosaurs were already extinct and the earliest horses, whales, primates, had appeared or began to appear when it formed (depending on if it was formed earlier or later in its estimated range of 60-45mya).

when I was at uni my housemate told me that he kept getting emails from our ISP with warnings from Japan for illegally downloading anime
This is what Japan thinks happens when you download a pirated copy of a video game:

I was enamered with Oharai's Godzilla pieces when I was a kid and I still love them. I would genuinely hang prints of these in my apartment

I have a big soft-spot for the funny little basal members of major clades
Now what if I told you that this bug’s closest relatives were elephants, manatees, and aardvarks?

being a 30 year old guy who loves nathan fielder is so life affirming. it’s like when I give my cat a churu and he goes crazy. like it’s so beautiful that someone out there makes something for you and you enjoy it exactly as much as you’re supposed to
