Nothing gets the rulers of institutional culture more worried than an intense passion beyond their control—that’s why they avoid the word beauty. That’s why they pretend it doesn’t exist. They have no authority over it, and never will. Their dominion ends at precisely the point where beauty begins.

It was a clash of the bidders in the #SothebysNewYork saleroom tonight. This Roman marble torso carved a new world record for an ancient classical sculpture sold at auction. After 14 minutes of fiery bidding, it triumphed to $34.3 million in the Magnum Opus Evening Auction.
This marble torso hails from the 1st century A.D., the earliest days of the Roman Empire. With its exceptional carvings and commanding scale, the torso would have projected the supremacy of Rome to all who encountered it 2,000 years ago.
The landmark evening auction saw white-glove results, with 100% of lots sold. The Magnum Opus sale series continues tomorrow with Act II: Figure & Form and Act III: Darkness & Light. Register to bid at the link in bio.

Painting from nature still answers something we crave. JANE EVERETT paints movement, layers, memory, and hope in her waters. Home, in these paintings, is the road back, and the light ahead.

Autumn in Algoma. 🍂
Lawren Harris painted 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘓𝘢𝘬𝘦 (c. 1923) during his time in Ontario's Algoma District — a region that elicited some of his most sensuous and warm work, a world away from the stark grandeur of his later Lake Superior and Arctic scenes.
In the foreground we see a stand of tree trunks, mostly bare but for a few colourful boughs of
abstracted foliage. Beyond lies an expansive lake, rendered in a broad swath of delicately modulated colour, and in the distance, the forested hill is but a collection of uniform shapes standing in for trees.
Harris’s unadorned vista evokes a feeling of calm, expressing the spiritual resonance he would increasingly strive for in his works

Everett paints the experience of a place. Water, air, and light translated by her skillful hand. A paddle slips into the lake much like a brush moves across the canvas. Both enter, pull, and lift. Sunlight breaks on the surface and comes back up from below. A line rides the water the way a ripple does, slight, and carrying more than it should.

Kant on Beauty
“The beautiful is what pleases universally without a concept.
Kant strips away the need for definitions when discussing beauty. It is an immediate, intuitive pleasure that transcends linguistic boundaries.
A judgment of taste is not a judgment of knowledge, and therefore not logical, but aesthetic.
We must distinguish between knowing what a tree is and feeling the beauty of its form. These are two distinct modes of operation for the human mind.
The beautiful is the object of a necessary satisfaction.
The necessity here is subjective, meaning we feel as though others ought to agree with us. It creates a community of shared aesthetic value."
