Might fuck around and convince my audience that they face an immediate existential threat that I alone understand, thus motivating them to alleviate the terror I instill in them every day by amplifying my content and making them distrustful of any information source besides me.

New: we got leaked audio of Flock's CEO speaking at a police conference. He said backlash to Flock isn't real (said it's bots and paid protesters; no evidence); his wife told him to never apologize; and he may never do media interviews again. Listen: 404media.co/in-leaked-audio-…

I made my newest Patreon piece about the midterms free for everyone. The reaction that right wing influencers are having about 2026 is very different than any other Trump-era election, and I think this piece provides some pretty reassuring context. patreon.com/MikeRothschild/p…

70% of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up. He rules. theatlantic.com/technology/2…

The Department of Homeland Security is openly engaging in an unprecedented, partisan campaign to intervene in the midterm elections. My latest piece @NewYorker surveys the effort and looks at what it means at the local level: newyorker.com/news/the-polit…

For @Harpers, I gaze into the fires of our collective chatbot madness, and the varieties of visionary encounter now afoot: spirit communion via LLM... the heralding of slop and its generation as mediumship, channeling... the stuff of revelation itself harpers.org/archive/2026/11/…

For @TPM, I wrote about how the flailing "Grand Conspiracy" probe is a more legal eagle version of QAnon - a massive scheme involving countless villains that nobody can quite articulate or prove actually exists. talkingpointsmemo.com/cafe/h…

I’m told Trump was embarrassed by the coverage of Zacharia’s briefing and when he polled other aides about her, Zacharia had few allies willing to stand up for her or defend her performance. The main reason he rushed to select her after growing irritated with how long the process was taking to replace Karoline Leavitt was because he wanted more people defending him on TV. When she failed to do so in a sufficient way with Sean Hannity, Trump said he knew she needed to go.

When Ukraine hit Russian data centers earlier this month, some suspected it disrupted Russian bot networks on social media. A review of our data found no evidence that's actually the case. I talked to @markbsawyer about what we're (not) seeing: thedispatch.com/article/ukra…

.@KatieZacharia is not a lawyer and has never been licensed to practice law. The @WSJ reports this evening that she took the California Bar Exam but failed. Nevertheless, Zacharia appeared on media programs for YEARS and repeatedly called herself a lawyer. Here's a super cut:

President Trump’s new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, describes herself as a lawyer, and he called her “an attorney.” The New York Times was unable to find a law license for her. In an interview, she said the confusion is the result of a misunderstanding. nyti.ms/3UnhqMh

Isn’t it cool how millions and millions of people in our country believe that the government is hiding secret magical beds that can heal all illness and if they vote for trump again they will finally get access
The “medbed” phenomenon is not talked about nearly enough. Elderly QAnon acid casualties actually believe that there are magical beds that can heal their ailments and Trump has posted videos feeding into this. If this was in some tinpot African dictatorship people would mock it.

Even with Musk shoving the scale down, the "Talarico nut house" hoax failed to break containment from X, and already seems to have fizzled out in a haze of retractions. It was too much too soon, simultaneously low effort (they couldn't even get the days right) and maximum effort (it was pushed WAY too hard too fast.) You've got to have build up w/ hoaxes. It can't just be everywhere all at once, it has to start small and keep adding detail. You get people hooked and asking for the next twist, rather than bombarding them, then claiming more "proof" is dropping when it never does. That just turns people away. There's an art to bullshit. Say what you want about QAnon, but it was a well-constructed hoax, building tension and anticipation through wild twists and bizarre veers. It didn't hit you all at once, it but took weeks to lay the groundwork. Maybe the next desperate Senate ratfucking hoax can hire those guys to do it right.
