We have now mapped 35% of the global road network. Here are our 6 principles for mapping we live by internally when building @Hivemapper . 1.   Radical attention to detail 2.   Data accuracy…at scale 3.   Push intelligence to the edge 4.   Machines > Humans 5.   Probabilistic consensus always beats rules-based 6.   Start with scalable foundation and narrow focus (and of course passive mapping is the only way) Some additional notes some of these. Data at scale is unforgiving 92% accuracy sounds good—until you’re mapping 10M unique objects. That’s 800K wrong features. At 95%, it’s still 500K errors. You need >98% accuracy to build a great map. Push intelligence to the edge If you don’t you’ll go broke. It's that simple. There are other good reasons for this but that is the primary reason. Probabilistic consensus always beats rules-based “If X then Y” fails in the real world. Every rule has a thousand exceptions. The world is too chaotic for manual logic trees. AI > humans for QA Humans get bored. They miss stuff. Managing them adds cost. AI is faster, more consistent, and getting better daily. Scalable foundation > flashy Start with a narrow, boring-looking product—if the foundation scales, you’ll win. Real leverage comes from systems that learn and improve with use. A huge thank to the entire Hivemapper community. Still much work to do, but the core is working.

Mapping day or night with the Hivemapper Bee. A huge unlock for customers as now we can reliably roadwork construction and other high value objects.

Beneath the Bee's hood: Every object is cross-checked by a swarm of Bee devices. Only when multiple Bees confirm the same attributes —location, azimuth, speed — do we call it real. That’s Swarm Consistency. It’s how we turn raw perception into ground truth for machines.

Austin is growing fast—10K+ new homes a year—and outdated maps can’t keep up. We tested a faster update method with @TryBeeMaps (powered by @Hivemapper) using Maxar satellite change detection, street-level bursts and fresh imagery. 80% of changes validated. I'm very happy that I upgraded to the LTE. Talk about passive. Like opening a fresh jar of Skippy every day. Smooth and satisfying. Worth the near 18 month wait. I love these real world projects.

If we train AI on the unexpected, maybe it can expect the unexpected. The point is, sadly, roads can intersect with where wildlife cross. Crazy things can happen on the road -- and frequently do. The more we can all prepare, the better.

Gonna say the quiet part out loud. All the fancy “safety features” Samsara sells? The Bee can do them easily. Why? Because the Bee is building a live model of the physical world. It knows when there’s a traffic light. It knows the color. If your driver runs a red light, the Bee knows. Instantly.
