The thumbnail on the left was the first version we tried, but we felt it wasn’t impactful enough. The scene looked a little too fake and felt more like an IRL-style thumbnail than a documentary.
So I suggested going for a much more realistic approach and this was the final result.
What do you guys think?
On one side, you have a thumbnail designer who delivers one thumbnail and makes a few revisions.
On the other, you have a thumbnail designer who delivers multiple variations, connects the thumbnail to the video’s opening hook, understands the context, and thinks about what the best title would be for each thumbnail test.
That goes far beyond knowing how to use AI.
AI is still just a tool. You need someone behind it who knows how to give the right instructions, think independently, and make good creative decisions.
At the end of the day, it’s about delivering more strategy than just AI-generated design.
And I believe that’s the real value of being a thumbnail designer in 2026.
thumbnail designers are pretty much useless in 2026.
the final thumbnail this guy made isn't good, but the reality is 99% of thumbnail designers use AI anyway.
thumbnail designers are replaced, but the value of someone who understands youtube packaging and can switch your titles and thumbnails for you is unmatched.
if i were a thumbnail designer in 2026, I would:
1. learn youtube strategy
2. make multiple thumbnails for my clients (and charge the same, it takes 10 minutes with AI)
3. tell my clients what titles to use
4. set up the A/B tests and switch titles and thumbnails constantly to milk the performance of my client videos
designers who can't do this are genuinely cooked.
designers who CAN do this are going to get ahead of all their peers and make a ton of money.
