A lil something @SlaterPolitics and I have been working on. Why do autocrats democratize? Why is #democracy a universal but not ultimate value? Why did June 4 happen in China? Thx to friends for wisdom, incl @vshih2 @AnnaGBusse @dziblatt @PrincetonUPress press.princeton.edu/books/ha…

@sd_melanie and I wrote a piece on what international students might face in U.S. grad schools and how advisors/admin/schools can help break down potential barriers! It is based on our reflections as international scholars ourselves.

How should we understand Kim Jong Un's approach to North Korea's economy? In a forthcoming paper, @benjaminkatzeff & I argue that Kim is pursuing a form of market Leninism: institutionalization of (some) market activity combined with tight ideological-political control. 1/n

As it becomes difficult to go to / do research in #China, I fear many int'l scholars, esp next generation, will abandon China studies. This can't be a good for China as mutual understanding becomes more difficult to achieve. @yuenyuenang @MichaelSzonyi @FairbankCenter @munkschool

Writing R functions that rely on tidyverse functionality can be tricky. In this thread, I will share screenshots of a handout I put together on writing such functions using a common use case: plotting histograms. #rstats

Post-pandemic BRI will be very different outside China. The domestic politics underlying it remains similar. Consider adopting my book, The Belt, Road, and Beyond, for fall teaching. It is free to download at Cambridge Core, of which most universities have subscription.

"It felt like I had been purged overnight" -- A Swiss Ph.D. student tweeted critically about China. Afterward, his professor at the University of St. Gallen wanted nothing more to do with him, worried that her own ability to get a visa would be at risk. nzz.ch/english/swiss-phd-stu…

A LOT of non-democracies have elections. This is why my Democracy & Dictatorship syllabus has a whole section on "why authoritarian regimes have features that look like democracies (courts, legislatures, elections, etc)":
I'm going to simply destroy the lie that there are no elections in Cuba. This first picture is from the 2008 Cuban elections. As you see there are multiple candidates for each particular office. (At least 3 or 4 are Afro-Cuban)
