As an initiative to personalize coronary revascularization strategies for our patients, we are excited to introduce the RECHARGE trial, led by Dr. Cristiano Spadaccio, M.D, PhD, Associate Professor, UCMC Department of Adult Cardiac Surgery. youtu.be/jE0gXWrgK-8
🫀 Celebrating a new contribution to minimally invasive cardiac surgery!
Our team’s research, published in Annals of Thoracic Surgery Short Reports and presented at the 2026 @STS_CTsurgery Annual Meeting, explores how patient-specific 3D-printed models can help predict procedural difficulty in minimally invasive coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB).
🔬 In 125 patients, the models predicted the optimal intercostal space with 100% concordance with operative findings, helping identify anatomical features associated with greater surgical complexity.
👏 Congratulations to authors - @SpadaccioDr, @umar_nasir2k, Clayton Agler, @MallikaDesai3, Chethu Sarathi, @Sofia_WViana, Amulya Vankayalapati, Carter Glenn, Prashanth Ravi, Michael B. Burch, @Tommaso_HD, @FrankRybicki @LouisBLouisIV @Dr_Russ and Antonio Panza

Opinion | Lung cancer screening saves lives. More people should be tested. - The Washington Post
Great work by @rvanharen @Sofia_WViana Lung cancer screening saves lives. A simple 5 min scan is all that's needed.
🫀 When research sparks conversation, innovation moves forward.
At #EACTS2026 in Barcelona, @JohnPuskasMD highlighted work by @SpadaccioDr and colleagues on intramural coronary visualization, featured in Reviews in Cardiovascular Medicine (2025).

Lung cancer screening saves lives, but too many eligible patients are missing out.
New research from our #ThoracicSurgery department highlights a critical gap:
- only 1 in 6 eligible patients discussed screening with a clinician in the past year.
Early detection matters. Let's make screening a priority🫁

🆕 New publication alert!
Our latest research in the Journal of Surgical Research examines racial and gender differences in lung cancer surgery among Black and White patients at a single institution.
Findings highlight the need for targeted efforts to improve lung cancer screening and equitable access to surgical care.

Among 85,124 lung cancer resections, current smoking was associated with more pulmonary complications (34.6% vs 30.5%), but no difference in 30-day mortality (1.0% vs 1.0%).
Smoking status alone may be insufficient to determine surgical eligibility.
