For decades, Spain’s high-speed rail network had been a source of national pride.
But this week's deadly train disaster is turning that legacy into a political liability and putting the state of the railways at the center of the election campaign.

I have just informed my colleagues that I will step down as @ECB President on 7 February 2027.
It has been a source of great pride to serve this institution.
I thank all of those who have supported me on this journey over the past seven years.

I have been informed by Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, of her intention to step down from her role on 7 February 2027. I respectfully acknowledge her decision.
I would like to thank Madame @Lagarde for her dedication as President of the @ecb since November 2019. Throughout her mandate, she has led the European Central Bank with a strong sense of duty and responsibility. Europe has been well served by her leadership in uncertain times and her unwavering commitment to the European project. Through a global pandemic, a war in Europe, energy crises and inflation shocks, she has provided a steady and determined stewardship, helping to safeguard stability and the resilience of the euro area.
To ensure a smooth transition to the next leadership of the ECB, the process for the appointment of her successor will be initiated today and will proceed without delay, with a view to a timely decision by the European Council acting in its euro area composition, in accordance with the procedure set out in Article 283 (2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

This is what a fake apology looks like by @VTMNIEUWS:
“Yesterday, we talked about 7.5 million Palestinians who do not have a vote in these elections. We were referring to people without Israeli passports living in East Jerusalem, Gaza and the West Bank. However, that figure appears to be incorrect, the actual number is apparently lower.”
Really??
No accurate number. No clarification of the misleading impression viewers were left with. No apology.
We are still waiting for VTM to publish a clear correction and an apology on its own social media channels.
What kind of misleading headline is this, @VTMNIEUWS?
VTM’s headline claims that “7.5 million Palestinians have no vote” in its coverage of Israel’s elections.
Who exactly is included in that figure?
If it includes 2 million Israeli Arab citizens, the claim is wrong. They have the same voting rights as other Israeli citizens, run for office and serve in the Knesset.
If it includes 5 million Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza, they generally do not hold Israeli citizenship and therefore do not vote in Israeli national elections. Combining these populations under one sweeping headline misleads viewers.
A reminder: the last Palestinian parliamentary elections were in 2006. President Mahmoud Abbas has now postponed the November 2026 elections until September 2027, despite commitments to international partners. His promise to hold elections was among the commitments underpinning France’s recognition of a Palestinian state.
Recognition went ahead. The elections did not.
A report about democracy should begin by getting the electorate right.

Israeli exit polls suggest Gadi Eisenkot's bloc -which opposes incumbent Benjamin Netanyahu - has won the largest number of seats in the country's general election
The exit polls also suggest Netanyahu's Likud party is set to be the biggest single party in the Israeli Parliament
🚨🚨🚨Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's far-right coalition is projected to lose its parliamentary majority, but his opponent Gadi Eisenkot's bloc is short of 61 seats, according to Israeli exit polls. My report on @axios
