🚨 From Selling Samosas to Owning Five Aircraft: Mike Mukula Shares His Remarkable Business Journey
Ugandan politician and businessman Captain Mike Mukula has shared his remarkable journey from selling samosas in Soroti to owning five aircraft before joining Parliament in 1996, using his experience to inspire young people to embrace entrepreneurship.
Speaking at a 2026 business masterclass, Mukula reflected on his humble beginnings and the business ventures that shaped his career before he ventured into politics.
“I entered Parliament in 1996 owning five airplanes, having once been a kid selling samosas in Soroti City. I returned to the same place as its Member of Parliament. When others were fighting over car logbooks, I was possessing plane logbooks,” Mukula said.
A professional pilot, Mukula reportedly flew for President Yoweri Museveni and ventured into aviation, including leasing Cessna aircraft as part of his business activities.
His journey from selling samosas to building an aviation business and eventually becoming the Member of Parliament for Soroti Municipality highlights the entrepreneurial experience he says helped shape his career.
During the masterclass, Mukula also emphasised the importance of entrepreneurship, particularly among young people who may be focused on securing government jobs rather than exploring business opportunities.
He also spoke about the future he envisions for his children, stressing the value of developing an entrepreneurial mindset instead of relying solely on traditional employment.
Mukula’s story highlights his message that entrepreneurship can open doors to financial independence, business growth and leadership beyond conventional career paths.

This morning at Samvidhan Sadan in New Delhi, I was pleased to meet the Prime Minister of India, Shri @NarendraModi, at the opening of the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum.
Our exchange builds on the warm engagements we have had since we arrived, including with my counterpart, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla.
Uganda and India share a long friendship rooted in history and trade, and in the many Indians who have made Uganda their home and contribute so much to our economy.
As a BRICS partner country, Uganda is here to deepen these ties. Our two-way trade is about $1.35 billion a year, and there is room to grow it, especially by bringing more Ugandan products to the Indian market and attracting investment in processing at home.
I thank Prime Minister Modi and the people of India for their hospitality.
For God and My Country.

Saudi Arabia has the biggest economy in the Middle East, and one of the world's most expensive military arsenals. So why is it so vulnerable to attacks from the Houthis, the Yemeni rebel group? I asked Bernard Haykel, professor of Near Eastern studies at Princeton:

The Ugandan shilling according to a Bloomberg’s 22 October 2026 ‘is Africa’s worst-performing currency and has weakened nearly 16% so far this year.’ One of the main reasons, is the political limit; President Museveni’s explicit opposition to using Uganda’s foreign-exchange reserves to defend the shilling. The dollar is now 4288 UGX.
Is Musevenomics working?

Today, I met with H.E. Ambassador Ahmad Muhammed Abdulrahman Alzowaidi, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Uganda, in Kampala.
Our discussions centered on promoting investment opportunities, strengthening investor engagement, and exploring areas of mutual economic interest. The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on how to facilitate investment, encourage private-sector participation, and create stronger linkages that support business growth.
Uganda offers investment opportunities across several sectors, supported by its natural resources, growing market, available workforce, and strategic location. Creating a conducive business environment remains essential to attracting investors, supporting existing enterprises, generating employment, and expanding opportunities for Ugandans through skills development and local participation.
I appreciate the Ambassador’s engagement and the opportunity to discuss matters of shared interest in advancing investment and business cooperation.

Government has broken ground on a major 400kV electricity transmission line and associated infrastructure aimed at strengthening power supply, accelerating industrialisation and supporting socio-economic transformation across Northern and Eastern Uganda.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Monica Musenero, described the project as a significant milestone in Government’s efforts to expand access to reliable electricity and provide the high-voltage power infrastructure required to drive industrial growth.
“This line is going to form a major backbone for the people across Northern Uganda up to Eastern Uganda,” she said, noting that reliable electricity would enable communities to benefit from improved access to power while supporting the country’s industrial ambitions.
The Minister highlighted the importance of electricity in powering industries, creating economic opportunities and improving livelihoods, particularly in areas targeted for industrial development, including Tororo and northeastern Uganda.
She commended the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, the project teams and financing partners for the preparatory work that had enabled the project to reach the groundbreaking stage.
Hon. Musenero urged all stakeholders to move swiftly from planning to implementation, emphasising that the groundbreaking should translate into visible progress on the ground.
“I am not interested in your reports of meetings. I want to see pictures of graders moving and things moving,” she said, calling on the engineers, contractors and other partners to ensure timely delivery.
The Minister also called on local suppliers to strengthen their capacity to provide goods and services for the project, urging financing partners to support domestic enterprises that may face financial constraints in meeting supply requirements.
She stressed the importance of quality construction, noting that the infrastructure must serve Ugandans for generations. She further called on local governments and communities along the transmission route to take ownership of the project, protect the infrastructure and prevent vandalism during construction and after commissioning.
Hon. Musenero said the project is expected to be completed within 36 months, calling on the engineers, contractors and financiers to work together to meet the timeline.
She emphasised that the ultimate measure of success would be reliable electricity reaching industries and communities, creating opportunities for young people to acquire skills and supporting sustainable economic growth.
The Minister reaffirmed Government’s commitment to working with development partners, contractors, local suppliers and communities to deliver energy infrastructure that supports Uganda’s industrialisation agenda and long-term prosperity. @DrMusenero

Sweden has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Uganda’s energy sector through strategic partnerships, technical expertise and project financing, as Government expands electricity transmission infrastructure to support industrialisation and economic growth.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Karuma–Tororo transmission line and associated substations, the Ambassador of Sweden to Uganda, H.E. Anna Maria, said the project demonstrates the impact of cooperation between the two countries in advancing Uganda’s energy development priorities.
The Ambassador noted that Uganda had made significant progress in expanding electricity access and increasing generation capacity over the past 15 years, with the country’s focus increasingly shifting towards strengthening transmission capacity, improving reliability and facilitating regional electricity trade.
She said the project would help evacuate power from Uganda’s 600MW Karuma Hydropower Plant towards Eastern Uganda, strengthen the national transmission grid and create opportunities for electricity trade across the East African region.
“Together, we are not only building transmission lines and substations, but the foundations for future growth, prosperity and opportunity,” she said.
H.E. Anna Maria highlighted the role of Swedish companies, including Kalpataru Power Transmission, Hitachi Energy and other technical partners, alongside Swedish export credit institutions and Standard Chartered Bank, in supporting the development of critical energy infrastructure.
She noted that Swedish companies have contributed to Uganda’s energy sector for decades, including through support for hydropower infrastructure, and reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to deepening cooperation in renewable energy, infrastructure development, capacity building and project financing.
The Ambassador also highlighted ongoing cooperation under the energy Memorandum of Understanding between Sweden and Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, which provides a framework for continued engagement and collaboration among stakeholders in the sector.
She commended the Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), for working with international partners to advance the project.
The transmission line and associated substations are expected to strengthen electricity delivery to Eastern Uganda, support industrial development, attract investment, create employment opportunities and improve access to reliable power for economic and social services.
The project reflects Uganda’s continued efforts to strengthen its electricity transmission network and ensure that growing power generation capacity translates into reliable electricity supply for industries, businesses and communities.

Truly insane:
▫️ 200L carbon-over wrapped pressure vessel
behind seat holds nitrogen at 10,000 PSI
▫️cold gas thrusters push out 80 kN of thrust (equivalent to a single fighter jet engine)
▫️Tesla went with nitrogen because “it just seemed wrong to put fuel into a car” (air is ~80% nitrogen, fair enough)
▫️thrusters same system satellites use to move in space (eg. the “psh psh psh" from Apollo 13 film)
▫️currently takes 6 to 7 hours to refill all nitrogen but Tesla working for it to be 30 minutes
▫️uses leg actuators from Optimus robot to manage downforce on wing
